Slave Culture in the Americas
Slaves in the Americas spoke different languages and came from different cultural backgrounds. However, they did have a lot in common, so they used that to build a new African American culture

Families were a vital part of slave culture. They were used a refuge but families were often broken apart Religion was a second refuge. They were typically Christian with a mixture of African religions

Slavery in the Jamestown
Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English colony in America. Due to high mortality rates (death rates), the colonists needed a source of labor. At first, they started to bring indentured servants Indentured servants are workers who sign a contract to work for 4 to 7 years for an employer who pays for their journey to America.
9
Slavery in Virginia The first Africans to arrive in Virginia came by a Dutch ship in 1619. Some were servants, some were slaves As the demand for labor grew and the price of slaves dropped, more colonists turned to slave labor. By the mid-1600s, most Africans in Virginia were slaves.
10
Slavery in the Southern Colonies
Southern colonies could grow a large number of cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo. These cash crops required a large number of workers By the 1700s, slave labor rather than indentured servitude was the main source of labor on plantations The Southern colonies passed slave codes to prevent the slaves from rebelling Slave codes are laws designed to control slaves. Some were stricter than others
12
Slavery in the Middle and New England Colonies
New England colonies could not grow cash crops, so slavery did not become very important to this region. The Middle colonies relied on indentured servants rather than slave labor. However they did use some slaves to work on farms, as skilled laborers, and on ships
13
Check for understanding
Create a cause and effect chart In the cause section, give reasons why the African Americans were enslaved. Example: need for labor In the effects section, explain what happened to the people they left behind in Africa, what happened to the American economy, and how African American culture in the U.S. developed.
