2. Introduction Current teacher recommendations.
Course Selection for 10th grade is based on:
Current teacher recommendations.
Credits needed and achieved.
periods maximum per cycle.

3. Recommendations
Your teachers will base their recommendations on your performance in class.
You will see teacher recommendations on your Home Access Center screen.
Override/Underride? No need for override letter unless you do not meet the grade percentage prerequisite.
If you want a different level than your teacher recommends, change it and we will follow up in your discussion with Mrs. Schofield.

4. Credits
Major subjects meet 6, 7, or 8 periods/cycle=1.0/1.15/1.3 credit
Semester (1/2 year courses) meet 6 periods =.5 credit
Minor subjects meet 4 periods/ cycle = 0.7 credit
or 2 periods/ cycle = 0.3 credit
4.0 credits minimum to be a 10th grader
11 credits minimum to be an 11th grader

5. Graduation Requirements To graduate from North Penn High School, you need 23.0 credits:
4 credits of English
4 credits of Social Studies
4 credits of Math or Science
4 credits of Science or Math
2 credits of Arts and Humanities
1.2 credits of Phys. Ed.
0.9 credits of Health
3.9 credits of Electives=23.0 credits minimum
**Keystone Proficient = Alg 1, Biology, Literature**

6. Scheduling Options Students must have a total of 38-42 pds per cycle.
Students may choose 2 majors and 1 minor OR 1 major and 4 minors OR 1 major, 1 minor, and 2 semester courses.
Students MUST have a backup to EVERY Major, Semester, and Minor elective or one will be chosen for you by NPHS.

9. Pre Period 1: AM Health & Society
Students taking honors Bio or Chem, who are highly motivated, may take Health 7290AM before homeroom so they are able to add an additional minor class to their schedule.
This is a 2 pd class that will meet at 6:45am 2x per cycle.
If interested, you must tell Mrs. Schofield and she will submit your request. Schedule as if you don’t get it.

10. Final grade 50-64% = E
Students who earn an E in 9th grade math (Algebra 1) MUST go to summer school or risk jeopardizing graduation.
Students in any grade who earn an E in English, SS, Math, Science, Health & PE need to use the summer school option.

11. Keystone Exams Algebra 1 – May 2017
If you are not proficient, it affects your math class for 10th grade:
If Basic: Take Algebra in 10th grade, not Geometry
If Below Basic: Take Algebra 1B in 10th grade, not Geometry
Take the summer class and take re-test in August.
Take Geometry in 10th.
Future Exams: 10th grade Biology & 10th grade English Literature

12. Course Advancement (page 5)
Online through Montgomery Virtual Program
5 days/week (5-8 hours daily) for 8 weeks
Available courses:
Geometry
Spanish I and II
French I and II
Latin I and II
German I and II
Japanese (via tutoring with HS teacher)

- Meet as a single period major (“Science of Flight”/ “Frontiers of Aviation”) and credited as an elective science

North Penn’s core classes which are NCAA-approved have an icon of a runner next to them – you need 16 “runners” in four years to play D-1 or D-2

15. GPA/Class Rank (pg. 6)
Class rank is determined by grade point averages
Starting in 9th grade, grades in major subjects are weighted, based on the level of the course.
Look at the chart on page 8 and on next slide for the Class of 2020
an “A” in a 4 level course = 4.0 quality points
an “A” in a 5 level course = 5.0 quality points
an “A” in a 6 level course = 6.0 quality points
an “A” in an AP class = quality points
In a class of 1000, the student’s total points from five major subjects are computed, and students are ranked from 1 to 1000.
Major subject course levels where you can maintain A’s & B’s provide the greatest opportunity for obtaining a high class rank.
The final grades you earn in 9th grade are the first grades to determine your GPA and therefore, your rank in class!

16. Class Rank For the class of 2020, there are approx. 1000 students.
At the end of 10th, 11th and 12th, the GPAs of all students are put in order from highest GPA to lowest and assigned a number for their place in the order.
The best GPA= 1/ the worst= 1000
Top 10%= 1-100
Top 25%= 1-250, etc.

Additional classes may need to be added to your schedule as necessary, based on your PSSA and Benchmark and Keystone results.
