King Faisal University College of Engineering Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering “Designing of Pre-Engineered Steel Building and its Contributions to save the Environment” By: Arafat Abdulrahman Ali & Ali Emad Almuhanna ABSTRACT Pre-engineered steel building systems (PEB) is a new concept for industrial building construction. It is a new type of system where steel sections are pre-fabricated from rolled sheets of steel and formed into the desired design shape. All the manufacturing and fabrication processes are conducted at the factory in order to eliminate the construction waste. Concrete utilization is also reduced which results in low Co2 emissions. METHODS / MATERIALS In this study a collection of required information such as building layout and building spans of ongoing Pre-Engineered Steel Building is considered to be analyzed and designed using STAAD .pro. PEB steel frame with 30m span length, 6m bay spacing, purlin spacing of 1.7m and roof slop of 10% and other geometry properties was assigned for this frame. The assigning load building loads such as dead, collateral, live, wind speed, building enclosed conditions, exposure type, seismic zones. Calculation of building loads using MBMA, ASCE05-7 design codes. Computer aided modelling of building main frame and secondary frame. Deciding the frame profiles based upon the moment and shear with the aid of STAAD Pro and applying the design loads and load combinations. Analyzing the design results and optimizing the main frames. Later on this study a comparison between Pre-Engineered steel frame and Conventional steel frame conducted based on the variance of the seismic zones and different span length of the main frame. RESULTS CONCLUSIONS Using PEB instead of CSB reduces the steel quantity, which will reduces the dead load, total weight and total cost of structure. Deformation response comparison has shown that PEB’s are much more stable and structural efficient than CSB structures. Results of PEB and CSB comparison for different span length shows that PEB efficiency in terms of cost and structural response increases by increasing span length. The proposed PEB structures provides; • Safe design • Economical • Environmentally friendly. Figure 2. PEB vs CSB in weight. The Figure shows that in all of the span lengths, PEB buildings are lighter than CSB. The difference becomes more obvious when the span length is higher than 40+ meters OBJECTIVES Analyze and design of PEB using computer aiding ( STAAD.pro) Design Optimizing using latest international Standards and Codes Compare the design out comes between Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings and Conventional Steel Building in term of economy and efficiency. PEB buildings are factory-made in-house in the company plant. The design and requirements of the structural members are made per the client’s specifications. The members are designed per the location of placement and numbered accordingly. They are modular and manufactured separately for easy transportation to the clients site and then erected into the correct place. Since the components are factory made, no welding or cutting is needed on site. Figure 3. PEB vs CSB in Sway Displacement. The Figure shows that in all of the span lengths, PEB and CSB are safe in the sway criteria. The figure also shows that PEB has less sway than the CSB building. This is due to the more optimized PEB building and decreased weight. Figure 4. PEB vs CSB in Deflection. The Figure shows that in all of the span lengths, PEB and CSB are safe in the deflection criteria. The figure also shows that PEB has less deflection than the CSB building in all of the span lengths.
