Europe is a continent – a big landmass often with clear boundaries e.g. Africa and S. America. The Ural Mountains separate Europe from Asia. What is the EU? The European Union is a community of 27 countries linked by economic and political principles. The idea began in the 1940s to strengthen ties between countries so that they would be less likely to go to war again. They try to work together. For example: trade is made easier between countries.
