MECHATRONICS LABORATORY
Director: I. Charles Ume, Ph. D. Website: Acknowledgement: Lab was equipped with a $180k grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Georgia Tech Siemens Mechatronics Courses: ME 4447: Microprocessor Control in Manufacturing Systems Website: ME 6405: Introduction to Mechatronics ME 8843: Advanced Mechatronics
3
Mechatronics What is Mechatronics?
Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and manufacturing processes.
4
Vision Statements Teach our students to learn to design and build electro-mechanical systems, and intelligent machines and products Teach them to be able to function in environment that fosters interdisciplinary activities Prepare them for industrial positions Prepare them to succeed as researchers in graduate schools and research laboratories
5
How Are Vision Statements Accomplished?
By: Class lectures Lab assignments Oral presentations Report writings Collaborative learning (working in teams)
6
Course Format In-class lectures Laboratory Experience
Class meets 3 hours per week Lecturing is done by instructor Students can participate in lecturing (optional) Laboratory Experience Electronic Exercises Done by individual student Takes each student about 1 hour per week to complete each one Three Electronic Exercises (1, 2 and 3) are assigned: Overview of test equipment, soldering and RC filters 555 Timer and its applications Stepper motor controller and driver
7
Course Format Group Lab Exercises Done in groups of 3 students
Each group spends about 3 hours every two weeks to complete Four group lab exercises are assigned per semester Interfacing host computer with MC9S12C32 and sequencing light emitting diodes. Strain gage data acquisition using A/D conversion DC motor control using interrupts and pulse width modulation (real-time control) Programmable logic controller (PLC) Note: Each lab assignment is demonstrated; and only two lab exercises require report

TYPICAL STUDENTS PROJECTS in ME 8843
ME 8843 is advanced mechatronics course It is project based Can be taken by students who have completed either ME 4447 or ME 6405 (Introduction to Mechatronics) Some undergraduate students with high GPAs can be allowed to register for ME 6405 Currently ME 4447 and ME 6405 are taught together, but students who registered for ME 6405 are required to do more in class Enjoy watching the projects by clicking on the links provided
