What are primary and secondary sources? Think, pair, share Primary Sources- Primary sources are firsthand historical materials that were written or produced in the time period of a historical event Secondary Sources- Materials made by people who were not eyewitnesses or participants in a historical event and who base their interpretation of the event on primary sources, research Make a list of primary and secondary source examples Primary Examples: pictures of an event, description made by a person participating or witnessing an event, diaries, census records, birth certificates, receipts, photographs, ID cards, etc. Secondary Examples: textbooks, encyclopedia entries, history books and magazines, graphs and charts, etc.

13 Biography Bags At the teacher’s signal, open your bag and examine the items within All of the items in the bag are artifacts from one person’s life. Try to determine what the person is like based on the evidence in their bag. Inferences A man or woman Religion? Old or young Homeowners or renters Married or signal Type of Job Parents or Childless Hobbies or Interests Race For each claim you make about the person, provide supporting evidence related to the object in the bag. Ex: “This person has a pet because they have a reminder to schedule a vet appointment for their pet”

Each team will get one card with one of the six themes Teams may use the textbook for research Find the definition/examples Teams will then work together to plan a 2/3 minute skit which features their theme You may not use the name of your theme All members must be involved in the skit Other teams must guess which theme it is
