Hybrid Networks Growing use of NLR’s services Project uses combination of NLR services to put together their own network Primarily using WaveNet and FrameNet services Project picks technology, bandwidth and price to meet specific project needs Can be a scientific application OR another network service. Expect to see PacketNet used as well. nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Hybrid Networks Example - TransitRail Network service provided by CENIC and PNWGP NLR infrastructure used TR Backbone WaveNet - TR backbone circuits FrameNet Backup bath for WaveNet circuits 1 GE dedicated, burstable above 1Gb if bandwidth is available Access Typically 1 GE or 10 GE interface, dedicated or non-dedicated bandwidth VLANs nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Hybrid Networks Impact Network Diagnosis Much harder to diagnose a problem What layer Who is responsible for the infrastructure in question. NLR support model Currently divided by network layer Hybrid networks, need someone who is looking at ALL the layers Network performance Similar to network diagnosis More components to tune. No longer just an IP performance issue nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Infrastructure Update - WaveNet
Steady demand for WaveNet services NLR has allocated 199 WaveNet Circuits to date 126 Active Circuits 75 Customer Circuits 51 Backbone Circuits (L2, L3, Optical Switch) 32 Misc Circuits - spare, unallocated, reserved, SC07 41 Decommissioned circuits includes SC related circuits, circuits no long in use by customers, etc. nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Infrastructure Update - FrameNet
Demand continues to grow 10 GE interfaces and non-dedicated bandwidth are popular 7 members with dedicated 10 GE interfaces 86 Active VLANs Both dedicated and non-dedicated Adding FrameNet connection to MANLAN switch Support layer2 connectivity to international networks New map Dedicated bandwidth per segment added to the NOC page ( nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Infrastructure - FrameNet
Bandwidth on demand project Scheduled dedicated bandwidth Not real-time, but advanced reservations Phased implementation - completed by year end Beta testing with the ETF Initially fixed endpoint, configured VLAN ETF uses as needed, billed according to use Phase 2 Web interface to implement established VLAN No access to additional VLAN parameters Phase 3 Web access to VLAN parameter nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

Infrastructure Update - PacketNet
Adding additional routes CIC members have come on-line: Indiana, Purdue, MERIT, Wisconsin, Minnesota (1G only), UIUC, PSU (through Pittsburgh) Total routes announced - 8,228 Adding Layer3 backbone circuit between CHIC and ATLA. nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc

SC07 Infrastructure 2 10 GE FrameNet, 2 10 GE PacketNet Providing C-band transponders for CA to NV link, but no other Layer1 circuits Applications - 21 requests to date for NLR connectivity Includes 3 International requests Many members using PacketNet as the default connectivity for SC07. No need to submit connectivity request. nlr.net © 2004 National LambdaRail, Inc
