Registered nurse who works in the DEU

Clinical Liaison Nurse (CLN)
Registered nurse who works in the DEU The CLN is a liaison person between clinical staff, CNM, students and ALN Works Mon- Friday am and pm of possible Familiar with the various curriculums for BN, DEN, CAP and Paramedic CLN organises student experiences to meet their learning outcomes, facilitates and runs the orientation day Student allocation to DEU staff, peers and or patients Arrange rosters for students with the ALN Anticipates and organises extra experiences for the students Works with students on a one to one basis as required and review any practice log requirements Student assessments The CLN role is pivotal in the success of the DEU and requires careful selection and support . This is an appointed supernumerary position and can be shared between ttw people

Academic Liaison Nurse (ALN)
Member of staff from Massey/Whitireia Present in the DEU for one hour per student per week Work with students on one to one as required Provides consistent support to students, CLN and DEU staff Assist students to socialise into the professional nursing role Monitor student progress and complete student assessments Assist DEU staff to set realistic learning goals for students Works in collaboration with staff in DEU and CLN before and after clinical placements Communicates any concerns about students to students, CLN, CNM, and academic course leader Undertakes formative and summative assessments with the CLN May have more than one DEU to visit e.g 2 surgical areas

Student Role Take responsibility for their learning.
Self-monitor progress toward achievement of the competencies for Registered Nurse scope of practice (New Zealand Nursing Council, 2012) Obtain feedback from CLN, ALN and DEU staff. Maintain communication with DEU staff regarding the patients'/clients health status. Provide care consistent with the learning outcomes as outlined in the respective course requirements. Be accountable to the RN for the care provided. Immediately contact CLN/ALN In the event of a 'critical incident' occurring. Participate in the evaluation of the overall effectiveness of the DEU practice area with respect to student learning outcomes. Be involved in collaborative research and quality activities as appropriate. Participate in peer teaching/learning through discussion, skill practice and reflection. There is no onus on either student to teach; instead the relationship is collegial where learning occurs opportunistically. Practice the skills of direction and delegation as appropriate. .
