School Safety Inspections

What is an inspection? Essential to disclose unsafe acts or conditions
Determine reasons for their existence Recommend corrective action

Reasons to inspect Prevent employee injuries – reduce workers’ comp costs Prevent student and visitor injuries – reduce liability and property costs OSHA Requirement / IIPP Accident Equipment repairs/modifications Facility repairs/modification

Scheduled Inspections
Conduct on a regular basis as determined by site administrator or safety committee Review safety equipment (eyewash, fire extinguishers, etc.) to verify proper working order

Unscheduled Inspections
When new substances, processes, procedures or equipment which present potential new hazards are introduced into the workplace When new, previously unidentified hazards are recognized When occupational injuries and illnesses occur Whenever workplace condition warrant an inspection

Involve Others Different personnel inspect several areas on campus for different reasons. Checklists Get to know your site Become familiar with problem areas Raise the bar – expect more from site staff

document those items that have been repaired or modified recognize improvements communicate that things can change identify those hazards that keep coming back

Inspection Activities
Make checklists available to personnel who will be completing them Make sure that items needing repair/modification will have corrective actions Generate a work order or maintenance request File all inspection records Insure the inspections will be completed according to the timeline in the IIPP
