Scholar grants range from 2 to 12 months (Flex, Global, Core)
Is release time set or scheduled?
Can junior faculty get release time? Does it affect the tenure clock?
Can adjunct faculty go and be offered work on their return?
University of South Florida grants a leave of absence, maintains salary and sabbatical eligibility

Can junior faculty accept a Fulbright without jeopardizing tenure?
St. Bonaventure University highly values international teaching, research and service in tenure decisions.
Texas State University gives an automatic salary increase to returned Fulbright Scholars.

14. Salary Most Fulbright Scholar grants do not equal faculty salaries
Grants include a stipend, maintenance and travel/relocation for the grantee
Appalachian State University tops off the Fulbright grant to match current faculty member salary. Gives equivalent Fulbright funding to affected department to hire replacement faculty.

Fulbright Scholars need uninterrupted coverage with their regular health insurance.
Grants offer only supplementary coverage that includes medical evacuation, but not preexisting conditions, or coverage for family members.
Are other benefits continued, for example, retirement?
Western Kentucky University maintains full benefit package at the university’s expense.

Host a Fulbright Day! Sponsor IIE/CIES staff to travel to campus for a series of presentations with faculty, administrators and alumni.

18. Promoting Fulbright Scholar Programs
Order additional materials for distribution around campus or to have on hand for meetings
Invite a Fulbright Ambassador or Outreach Lecturer or hold your own Fulbright Workshop!
Increase the number of scholar liaisons at your institution and have a discussion about where Fulbright Programs should “live” at your institution
Invite IIE/CIES staff to conduct tailored workshops and to facilitate conversations about building institutional support
Work with returned Fulbrighters to publish articles about their experience and the impact it has had on their home institution and community

19. Case Studies
Windward Community College speaks at UH system wide events regarding the value and importance of Fulbright as a resource for their campuses. Special attention is made to address how Fulbright facilitates meeting institutional goals, mission statements and accreditation requirements.
Cleveland State University uses Catalog of Awards to match faculty to opportunities, reviews project statements, invites staff annually.
University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Grinnell College and Drake University share funding to sponsor IIE/CIES staff to travel to their region annually.

20. Case Studies
Bluefield State University invites Outreach Lecturers throughout the year to speak on campus and at local high schools. Liaison makes a point to visit IIE/CIES when he is DC.
Illinois State University actively engages with us on social media to share messages and announcements with their campus community.
Northern Virginia Community College reached out to staff to see if anyone was a Fulbrighter, and hosts IIE/CIES staff in the fall and an OLF in the spring

21. Encourage & Support
Suggesting combining Fulbright to sabbatical eligible faculty
Coordinate application review using Fulbright Alumni
Serve as a Peer Reviewer to get an inside look at the application process, or suggest a colleague to do so
Draft and widely share a document outlining institutional policies related to Fulbright, including leave, benefits and case studies of successful grantees
Understand that candidates may take 2 to 4 years to apply once they start seriously thinking about a Fulbright grant

23. Case Studies
University of Hartford stresses the relationship between participation in the Fulbright Scholar Program and Study Abroad.
University of Central Florida encouraged administrator participation in the IEA program, developing a pool of Fulbright champions within their senior level administration.
Louisiana State University researched policies at peer institutions and encouraged development of similar or better for their own campus.
Azusa Pacific University reviewed sabbatical policy and discovered non-research activities weren’t eligible for funding, and rewrote policy to allow for Fulbright grants.

Send letters of congratulations to grantees signed by Senior Leadership - President, Provost, Vice President or Dean

American Psychological Association hosted a Fulbright theme for their annual convention.
North Carolina State University developed a standard letter for senior administrators to sign for returned Fulbright Scholars.
Washington University in St. Louis includes both U.S. and Visiting Scholars in their annual President’s Reception.
James Madison University created a website with “Voices of Fulbright” that serves as a reference for interested faculty to consult.
North Dakota State University and Case Western Reserve University created a Fulbright “Wall of Fame.”
