2 Mayfield Education Mayfield Education is Victoria's leading staff education and training centre for the health and community services sector. For over 50 years Mayfield has provided health training programs. Mayfield is run by health care professionals for health care professionals Our courses and services equip people with practical, work related skills on their journey to become health care professionals.

3 Mayfield Ethos We aim to meet the training and assessment needs of each individual and will adjust the learning material and assessments accordingly. Support will provided at all points to allow the individual to successfully complete their studies. All training and assessments are delivered in relation to industry standards and regulations which are updated on a regular basis. The Course Co-ordinators, Educators and Assessors all continue to work in their specialised fields and bring the most up to date practical knowledge to the classroom.

Student Information Handbook contains information covering enrolment information, course information, the roles and responsibilities of Mayfield Students as well as how we deliver our training and assessments.

5 Blended Learning Blended learning is a teaching and learning style whereby students are given the freedom to enjoy the traditional methods of education with the flexibility of part time study days and work placement in our preferred healthcare Blue Cross Aged Care around Greater Melbourne. Additionally, students have access to the most recent workbooks, journal articles and academic papers which can be accessed online at Mayfield or at home

6 Study In-class and home
Mayfield students are expected to have the same contact hours on campus as you spend at home studying per week. Classes and workshops run for 2 weeks Monday – Friday then 2 days/week for 19 days How to prepare for study: Getting a diary or organiser as course length is 6 months Organising blocks of time as well as a space to study Giving yourself adequate time to work and study and planning in advance your roster, so that you’re best prepared for class. Enlist the support of friends and family

Hours 2 day/week classes for 27 days Onsite lectures, assignments, simulation Lab, exams Runs over 5 months Minimum of 80% Lecture attendance required Clinical Placement (Aged care setting) 3X5 day blocks On line Learning Resources & assessments

8 Typical Duties Provide personal support needs by assisting with Activities of Daily living (ADL’S) Assist with feeding clients Assist with toileting clients Provide support to people living with Dementia Assist with implementing Fall Prevention strategies Providing holistic care which includes emotional support to the client and possibly family members Support independence and well being

11 Assessment Some ways we test theoretical knowledge are:
We use a range of methods to assess knowledge, so that information can be tested in classroom and clinical settings to best prepare you for placement and life after you complete the course Some ways we test theoretical knowledge are: Examinations Assignments Presentations Lab/simulations E-learning Clinical Practice Competency is a Pass/Fail grade before you’re safe to go out on placement What if I don’t pass the first time? That’s okay, there often isn’t a ‘one time only’ assessment and there are usually chances to make up the assessment or reattempt

12 Other Considerations Before you start your course at Mayfield you need to consider a few things Do you have any learning challenges? if so these need to be documented in the pre learning check list. This will also enable us to make up an individual learning plan to suit these needs. Do you understand what the job entails? Being part of the health organisation is not a 9 to 5 job. Shift work is involved which includes early, late and night shifts.

13 Work Placement Placement is where you get to practice your skills with real clients We can to organize placement close to home at a Blue Cross facility On rare occasions placement may be cancelled by the host btu this is for very good reasons eg. Disease outbreak Students are required to attend 100% of clinical placement (3 weeks in total) otherwise make-up time will be required in order for students to demonstrate competence Students will be required to pay an additional amount in order to complete make-up time unless they have been officially granted special consideration

15 days of placement is required in a care facility Monday – Friday (3 weeks ) Shift work to emulate ‘real life’ as close to possible. AM shifts ( ) PM shifts ( ) You will be buddied with another healthcare worker You will also have an Educator looking after you and your fellow students Attendance: 100% required

15 Policies The following policies must be adhered to in order to facilitate placement: Police Check (every 12 months) Immunisations Working with Children’s Check Uniform Navy full length pants and black or navy closed toe shoes Mayfield Shirt Arudent ID Basic Jewelry allowed only. Studs, wedding ring, etc. Refer to student handbook for further information.

16 Pre-requisites for all courses
Successful completion of Mayfield Education Language Literacy and Numeracy test which includes 5 minute Basic computer skills Assessment.

17 RPL Recognition of Prior Learning
If you’ve completed a comparable subject or course, you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, which means you may not have to complete that subject/s again. Please read the student handbook carefully to ensure that you undertake all necessary steps.
