Welcome to 6th Grade Language Arts!

Turning Every Child into a Reader!
Students will learn to read closely, to analyze the characters, the themes, and the craft of the literature they read. All of this work will be successful if your children actually read! The more children read, the better readers they become!

Independent Reading All students are expected to read a minimum pages each night. (30 minutes) All students must complete one line in their Reading Log daily. Parents must sign the log and it is shared with me on Friday. Students are expected to have a notebook and will respond critically to a collection of texts.

Book Bingo Students will be expected to read either 3 or 5 books per marking period in a variety of genres that are noted on a bingo card. Students will need to complete a summary activity for each book. Students will earn rewards for their bingo cards including homework passes and treats.

Reading Partnerships Students will be assigned a reading partner according to ability and reading interests. Partners will meet to discuss their reading, analyze characters, make connections and set goals. Partners agree on the amount of pages to read each evening.

Writing Units of Study in Personal Narrative and Literary Analysis
Poetry Other writing activities will include dialogue, novel response, letters and participation in various writing contests Grammar mini-lessons will be taught within writing units

Grading Tests- (final performance assessments, quizzes, writing assignments) Reading- (Reader’s Notebook, Book Bingo and reading analysis) Graded assignments- (class work, written assignments, etc..) Homework- (Study Island, Reading Log, preparation)

Homework Independent reading each night and a post-it note.
Study Island- one lesson every other week. Introduced in class on Monday and due completed the following Monday. Reading/writing classroom work completion.

Extra Help Extra help is available every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05- 3:30 pm. Students need to get a pass in advance to stay after school for extra help.
