2 “Old world” = Europe “New world” = North America France was the Mother (old) country Canada (called Nouvelle-France or New France) was the colony (new) Both were isolated from each until about 1000 yrs ago

3 Why did Europeans explorers make these journeys?
1) Curiosity 2) To prove that world was round 3) To find a fast (alternate) route to Asia 4) Increase wealth of their MC’s

4 Main explorers- the 3 Big c’s
1) John Cabot ( ) Italian, worked for the King of England Found codfish along Newfoundland and Labrador.

5 2) Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) -French
-Credit for putting Canada on the map -Thought the Iroquois word «Kanata » (means village) meant ‘Canada’ (as in the whole region) His colony attempts failed in Canada

6 3) Samuel de Champlain!!!!! (1567-1635)
French 1st European to establish a permanent European settlement in Nouvelle- France (Canada) -1608 built the HABITATION de QUEBEC (1st permanent Euro settlement in NF) HAB. De Queb = Quebec City now.
