What Will We Cover? File overview Selecting files, VERY IMPORTANT
Stop and ask questions any time This is really hard because of all the Windows versions so your screen may not look exactly like what I show but the idea is the same Extra stuff at the end that is pretty neat, want to see an example before we get started? Video photo tour and Panoramic
3
What makes our files? Scanners Digital Cameras
Saved images from s we get Downloaded from web pages Word and Excel documents
4
Where do files normally go?
Every PC since Windows 95 have used one common framework for photo and file organization. My Documents My Pictures My Scans Windows Vista and newer are just Documents, Pictures, etc. But wait, first a technique that is important
5
Selecting Files, Picture, Movies
Open any folder of files Click one CTRL Click – Individually select SHIFT Click – Select top and bottom and get all in between CTRL SHIFT Click - Combination CTRL A – Select them all Quick Access or Favorites
6
Digital Cameras Digital cameras and phones are great, but they can be difficult to manage. Some people keep all their photos on the camera or phone, not a good idea. You take a bunch of photos, and normally you want to put them in the computer for safe keeping, printing, sending to friends, making family history stuff, etc.
7
Example of transferring from camera
We are going to take a few photos and transfer them Your PC and camera will not look exactly like the steps I am showing you but it will be similar. I use my camera chip and put it right into my PC, and many cameras have a cable or a docking station. This camera has both. I also use a card reader, very common, everybody know what this is?
8
Example of transferring from camera
Have you noticed that all the pictures have funny names like DCIM0001.JPG What does that mean? All cameras give a name and a sequence number to the photos so you don’t overwrite them. This makes it hard for us to understand.
9
Example of transferring from camera
First we move the photos to the PC We will move the photos and make organizing folders in one step Then we rename them all at once There are other ways to do this but this is almost 100% certain to work on all Windows versions
10
Example of transferring from camera
First I will plug my chip from the camera into the PC Open the Folder You can use the copy wizard but it doesn’t always show up, that is why we are using this method
11
Example of transferring from camera
Open the DCIM folder (typical name), your camera may use a different name
12
Example of transferring from camera
Open the next folder if you need, my camera has an Olympus folder My Sony camera has a SonyDCIM folder
13
Example of transferring from camera
When you see the pix, click Edit, Select All Click the Select All Press CTRL A – that is Control and A at the same time
14
Example of transferring from camera
Click Edit, Move to folder Click Move to Folder
15
Example of transferring from camera
Use the + by My Documents Click My Pictures so it highlights Windows Vista and Windows 7 are slightly different, they have a Pictures folder
16
Example of transferring from camera
Click My Pictures so it highlights Click Make New Folder Button May also click New Folder button
17
Example of transferring from camera
Type in a descriptive name for the folder Click the Move button This has moved the pictures from the camera chip to the PC. They are gone from the camera
18
Example of transferring from camera
Now wouldn’t it be nice if you could rename all the pictures so they didn’t say weird names? Show Example Using file renamer programs you can pick the folder, crop the first bunch of letters, and then add whatever you want. Ant Renamer is great. We can rename all these pictures at one time using CTRL click and/or SHIFT click Demonstrate the process
19
Example of transferring from camera
There are a lot of free file rename utilities, but one program I use all the time is called Ant Renamer. It allows you to rename files, but it has many other features like trimming characters before renaming. Also portable er_portable
20
What about scanners? If you follow the same steps here you will be fine using most scanners. Most HP scanners have excellent software to scan old photos, touch them up, print them, them, etc. Any good scanner has good software. Digital cameras don’t always come with good software, but many do.
21
What program to touch up photos?
Again, many HP and other software packages are good at this. Photoshop? Great but expensive and takes years to learn properly. Paint.NET is fantastic and free GIMP is free and is amazing, red eye removal and other stuff built in.
22
Resizing Pictures Why not just use the ones from the camera?
Huge, 10x too big for most uses Explain 800x600 vs 3000x2000 FastStone Photo Resizer Makes copy of entire folder at the right size, and 800x600 is the sweet spot for web stuff I have another one, show it and then do an example
23
Finding Stuff Show different views, detail, large, etc
Show how to search by name Embed a tag and find the one photo with that tag Find duplicate photos, show simple find in this class but this is really a full class.
24
Dropbox Take your files and photos anywhere
Allow anyone to see photo albums magically created for you Make Sample Upload sample Compare file sizes, see how much smaller the pix are
25
Panoramic Pictures We added this one to show you something very nifty before we get started Download Free Microsoft Image Composite Editor from us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ice Install it, drag and drop photos in it, make a new panoramic.
26
Panoramic Pictures Take pix left to right, overlap each about half way. Takes a bit of tinkering because each PC, camera, and operating system are a bit different Once you have it figured out you can make super panoramic images; show samples
27
Other Topics – If Time Permits
Want to see a video photo tour with music? How do I move or copy my photos to an external hard drive? Do not use usb FLASH drives for this. They are to small, plus they are not going to last forever. USB Hard Drive Karenware Macrium Reflect or Acronis
