Von Thunen Model BY: Faiza Amatul and Sabreona Francis

2 Who made the Von Thunen Model
Johann Henrich von Thunen made this model on the obseravations he made from German cities in the early 1800s.

3 Model says 3 things taken into account by farmers:
Cost of land per year Price of crops when sold Cost of transportation to market when sold

4 Market Center of Model Where goods sold Usually large cities

5 Horticulture and Dairying
First ring Closest to market Dairy products Flowers Fruits Veggies Land cost high, goods sold high price also Perishable Require quick transport

6 Forestry Requires a lot of land Land must be cheap Grows trees
Wood expensive to transport Must be close to city 2nd Ring perfect Cheap land and Cheap transportation costs

7 Three Field Crops Require vast amount of land
Not expensive to transport Need large amounts of cheap land Land fallow for 1-3 years for soil to be healthy Cheap, abundant amount of land Far from city not expensive to transport

8 Ranching and Livestock
Vast amount of very cheap land Land does not have to have healthy soil Needs Land only with grass

9 Exception… The Von Thunen Model will be greatly altered if there are site features such as rivers or mountains

10 In conclusion…. The Von Thunen Model is a reliable predictor where agricultural products will be located around the market.

11 QUIZ TIME

12 What are 3 things farmer must consider when choosing a crop to plants?

13 Cost of land per year, amount gained by crops, cost of transportation to market.

14 What does the first ring mean? Why are these crops located there?

15 Horticulture and Dairying
Horticulture and Dairying. Products spoil quickly and need to be relatively close to the market. Require relatively small amounts of land.

16 What is in the second ring? Why?

17 Forestry because it require more land but needs to be close to the city because of expensive lumber transportation costs.

18 What is in the third ring? Why?

19 Cereal crops such as rice, corn, and wheat are grown in the third ring require lots of cheap land and are relatively easy to transport.

20 What is in the 4th ring and why is it there?

21 Ranching because it requires huge amounts of land and therefore must be cheap.

22 What are some things that can alter Von Thunen Model?

23 Rivers, Mountains or other physical features that are in the middle of a city
