4 RESPONSIBILITIES STUDENT PARENT COUNSELOR
College searches & college list (5-8 colleges) Communicate with student about your expectations Advise and support student and parent(s) through search and application process Application: - fee (fee wavier) - essay - test scores - transcript requests - teacher recommendation requests (2) - demonstrate interest FAFSA - Submit starting 10/01/16 (Prior-Prior) - Some schools may also require the CSS Profile or individual institutional financial aid applications - Send transcripts and JP2 profile – Send letters of recommendation Scholarship search Be open to ideas your students may present Write recommendation letter Be mindful of admission and scholarship deadlines Review application Communicate with all parties (Use !!!)

5 THE SEARCH PROCESS You and your student have discussed their future plans and your expectations concerning college: Geographic location/distance from home Environmental surroundings and weather Majors and special programs Size - student population and class size Cost/availability of scholarships and financial aid Other factor, such as faith and extracurricular programs

6 THE SEARCH PROCESS Your student has used the resources available to them through the College Counseling office to search for colleges: Human Resources - peers, family members, teachers, etc. Internet Resources Family Connection Collegeboard Forbes - America's Top Colleges Unigo – feedback from students who attend that particular college National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Books Fiske Guide Collegeboard Book of Majors Loren Pope's Colleges That Change Lives Donal Asher's Cool Colleges Frank Bruni's Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be College Fairs and Admission Representative Visits/Programs

7 THE SEARCH PROCESS College visits.
Official visits (2 excused from JPII) Preview Days or Fly-In Programs Over night visits Attend a class Talk to a professor Talk to current students Special talents: portfolio, audition, writing samples, demo recording, or highlight tape

8 TESTING Students should take appropriate standardized tests recommended by colleges of interest: ACT September 10, 2016 October 22, 2016 December 10, 2016 SAT and SAT II Subject Tests October 12, 2016 November 5, 2016 December 3, 2016 TOEFL: Test of English as a Second Language JP2 is a testing site for all SAT and ACT Administrations Mr. Connolly and Mrs. Peper will host an ACT review on Saturday, August 27. This is the only Saturday ACT review during the first semester. A registration link is located in Knights Notes. Online program called E-Prep, which is located in your student’s Family Connection Account Test Optional Schools – fairtest.org Testing Accommodations Questions– contact Pam Eatman

9 DEADLINES Early is Better - Early Decision, Early Action, Priority, Regular Decision, Rolling Admission UTK and UTC Deadlines UTK – Early Action Deadline for admission and priority scholarships Nov 1 UTK - Regular Admission application deadline Dec 1 UTC – Scholarship Deadline Dec 1 UTC – Application Deadline May 1 Tennessee Promise Registration Deadline is Nov 1st Early Deadlines can be anywhere from October 15-January 15

10 THE APPLICATION PROCESS
List of colleges is narrowed (5-8 colleges is a reasonable number). In regards to selectivity, it is good to have a reach school, possible school and a likely school in your college list. Student begins working on applications, either online or on paper, well before the deadline! College Application Saturday – August 27th Common Application Individual School Applications Coalition Application Admission Counselor – make sure your student makes his/her interest in a school known.

11 THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Work on application essay (if applicable). Request (2) teacher recommendations (if they haven’t done so already). Notify teachers of first application deadline and send request in Family Connection (currently being updated) Request test scores be sent from testing agency (unless he/she is applying to a test optional school). Request transcript from our office - All requests must be submitted 3 WEEKS prior to deadline. Make special note of whether the schools you are applying to have a postmark or receipt deadline. SUBMIT!

12 AWAITING THE DECISION Colleges will notify regular decision students of admissions decisions by April 15, 2017 (at the latest.) Finish the senior year strong! – All College admissions are conditional on completion of college preparatory curriculum at the level the student was accepted!

14 SELECTING A SCHOOL Student makes a decision and communicates their decision with the college of choice AS WELL AS the colleges they have declined. National Reply Date: MAY 1 Generally a postmark deadline Be aware of Housing Application and Deposit due dates

16 SCHOLARSHIPS Students who are searching for scholarships should be aware of deadlines as they can be different from application deadlines. Scholarship Resources: Internal scholarships from college of interest Private sources of financial aid Family Connection Scholarship Search

17 ATHLETIC RECRUITMENT Students who desire to play intercollegiate sports in Division I or Division II must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Students who desire to play for NAIA teams must register with the NAIA Clearinghouse. Students must send his/her test scores directly to the NCAA and NAIA Eligibility Centers Submit a transcript request on the Family Connection

18 ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES
If mid-year transcripts are needed, enter those requests in Family Connection under “my colleges” transcript request. Once you have accepted an offer from a school, make sure you request a final transcript be sent after your graduation from JP2. If a local scholarship is awarded during the Spring semester, you may have to report this to your school of choice.
