Prevention of Iron deficiency During the Complementary Feeding Period
2
AGENDA Introduction Nigeria health and infant feeding issues
Nutrient gaps during complementary feeding Way forward.
3
DEFINITION OF COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING
The process which starts when breast-milk alone is no longer sufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of infants and therefore other foods and liquids are needed, along with breast milk” (PAHO/WHO 2006) Complementary feeding means giving other appropriate foods to an infant in addition to breast milk. At least 500ml of milk should be given daily. Remember: The complementary feeding period is a critical part of the 1st 1000 days journey of an infant and should be accorded the seriousness it deserves.

5
CONSEQUENCES OF IRON DEFICIENCY
In children Perinatal mortality Child mortality Impaired cognitive/mental function Low IQ Failure to thrive Anemia

8
Strategies to Combat Iron Deficiency During Complementary Feeding
Micronutrient fortification (especially complementary feeds) – cereals Control of parasitic infections (diagnosis and treatment) Increased intake of other vitamins such as vitamin A, Vitamin C, folic acid through Supplementation, Fortification, Nutrition Education Dietary diversification/modification
