1 SENSITISATION – ENERGY SAVING & EFFICIENCY A Presentation By Suneel Grover Power Controller,HPSEB,SHIMLA

2 CONTENTS Energy Efficiency & Conservation Conclusion Power System
What is Energy? What is Electricity? Energy Efficiency Energy Saving Devices & benefits Energy Conservation Steps taken by GOI Some suggestions Conclusion POWER

3 Energy is the ability to do work
WHAT IS ENERGY? Let us ponder over some definitions: Energy is the ability to do work {it can be chemical energy, electrical energy, heat (thermal energy), light (radiant energy), mechanical energy & nuclear energy} Energy can be transformed into another form of energy. But it cannot be created. AND it cannot be destroyed. Energy has always existed in one form or the other. Initial measurement terms of energy Btu, Joules 1000 Joules = 1 Btu (Energy = Power x Time) It takes about 2000 Btus to make a pot of coffee & 1000 Btus roughly equals to average chocolate candy bar of 4 inches. A piece of butter toast contains about 315 kilojoules of energy, sufficient to light 60 Watt bulb for 1-1/2 hours.

4 WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? Where does the Word ‘Electricity’ Come from?
Electrons, electricity, electronic and other words that begin with “electr….” all originate from the Greek word ‘Elektor’ meaning “Beaming Sun”. In Greek, “elektron” is the word for amber. The Latin word, electricus, means to “produce from amber by friction.” So we get our English word electricity from Greek and Latin word that were about amber. One kWhr is the energy consumed by a 1000W device in one hour. “Electricity in the present day context has become a basic necessity like air & water”

5 ENERGY EFFICIENCY & CONSERVATION – A PARADOX
“Energy Conservation is a term which has connotation of doing without it, in order to save energy rather than using less energy to do the same thing which is the motto under energy efficiency.” “So let us follow energy efficiency practices to conserve electricity for the benefit of the society.”

6 ENERGY EFFICIENCY – opening a savings account – how?
By using Energy Efficient Devices Efficient Luminaries, traffic signals etc. Microwave Oven – Instead Conventional Electric Store; Efficient Water Heaters/Geysers & Gas Geysers; Efficient Refrigerators; Efficient Water Pumps;

7 POWER SAVING BY USE OF EFFICIENT LUMINARIES
S. No Parameters Incandescent Lamp Fluorescent Tube C F L 1. Power consumption 60 W 40+15 W or more 15/18W 2. Power Factor More than 0.98 Around 0.65 0.9 3. Life (hrs.) 8000 4. Power consumed by 15 lacs consumers with 4 lamps each 360 MW 318 MW 90 MW 5. Comparable Power savings in (MW) Incandescent lamp Fluorescents tube - 32 MW 270 MW

8 LET US SEE THE EFFECT ON A CONSUMER
S. No Category Incandescent Lamp (100W) C F L (20W) Saving P/month 1. Domestic Consumer 5 bulbs for 6 hrs. a day 90 Rs.2.50/kW = Rs.225/- 18 Rs.2.50/kW = Rs.45/- Rs.180 2. Commercial consumer 200 bulbs for 6 hrs. a day 3600 Rs.4/kW = Rs.14,400/- Rs.4/kW = Rs.2,880/- Rs.11,560

9 POWER SAVING BY USE OF EFFICIENT LUMINARIES IN TRAFFIC SIGNALS
S. No Parameters Incandescent Lamp LED 1. Power consumption 100 W 0.5W (20 Nos) 2. Power Factor > 0.98 3. Life (hrs.) 15000 Hrs 4. Power consumed by Signals with 8 lamps 8 MW 0.8MW 5. Comparable Power savings in (MW) Incandescent lamp - 7.2MW

10 COMPARISON OF ELECTRIC GEYSER V/S GAS GEYSER
Sl. No. Parameters Electric Geyser Gas Geyser 1 Initial Cost Rs.3000/- (for a 20 Ltrs. Capacity) Rs.2400/- (Gas Geyser + Cylinder & Regulator) 2 Price of Electricity / LPG Rs. 2.65/Unit Rs. 21/KG (in case of Cylinder) Rs. 14/KG ( in case of gas pipe line) 3 Cost of Energy for heating 20 Ltr. Of water up to 400C Rs. 2.65 Rs. 1.38 Rs. 0.94 4 For a family of four persons for one month (amount spent) Rs Rs Rs 5 ADVANTAGE TO THE CONSUMER Saving per month / family - Rs Rs 6 ADVANTAGE TO THE UTILITY Reduction in Peak Demand (Assuming 1 Lac Consumer using 2 KW elec. Geyser at a time during Mor. peak Hrs.) 125 MW

11 IN NUTSHELL - SAVINGS Parameters A B Power Purchase Cost
Rs /unit (Present ABT rate at 49.0 Hz) Rs.2.90/unit (Average rate of energy purchased Saving in Peak Demand 270 MW No. of Hrs. 6 Saving to HPSEB/ day 270x103x10.00x6 = 1.17 cr. 270x103x2.90x6 = 0.47cr. Annual Saving (Rs. Cr.) 1.17x365 = 335 0.47x365=171 Payback Period (No. of days) 100/1.17=86 100/0.47=212

12 SOME SUGGESTIONS……

13 IN INDIA, THE INITIATIVES SO FAR
Appliances Energy Labels launched; Innovative Lighting Program launched. There is need to do lot more…

14 ENERGY CONSERVATION Use the electrical luminaries only when needed;
Switch off all electric gadgets/ instruments like TV, UPS, Modems, Computers, Washing Machines, etc. from the main switch; Do not waste water – it is like wasting electricity Generate electricity from renewable sources like water, wind & solar to the extent possible.

15 MANDATORY USE It should be made mandatory to use :
ISI mark Compact Fluorescent Lamp Electronic Chokes Solar Water Heater in all Govt. buildings and CGHS ISI mark pumps both for water boosting and other purposes Energy efficient labeled appliances only to be used Only ISI marked wires, fittings to be used and checked after every five years by certified Inspectors. *Govt. of Haryana has already notified (vide No 22/52/05-5P dt ) such provisions for all Govt. buildings including Hospitals, Hostels, Canteens and Hotels etc.

16 INCENTIVE FOR INSTALLATION OF SOLAR WATER HEATER
Encouragement to be given for using solar water heaters. Uttranchal Regulatory Commission has allowed a rebate of Rs.75/- p.m. if consumer install and uses Solar Water Heating System for 100 Ltr. Capacity. A similar provision could be kept for Himachal also.

17 Also GoHP/HPSEB may consider that….
ISI mark Compact Fluorescent Lamps may be given to the consumer free(2-4nos.) who has paid Energy Bill regularly for one year in lieu of 2% rebate as per Industry practice. Also 2% rebate may be offered to all commercial establishments on their energy bills with 100% CFLs on their premises.

18 ENERGY EFFICIENCY & CONSERVATION – Solving the energy crisis
It’s a Bad Idea “Shaming” people into Saving Energy Why the hell would a Power Company try to get people to use less power? That’s like – McDonalds listing all the top dishes with a slogan “TRY & CUT DOWN ON FATTY FOOD INTAKE” Why would they want to lower their sales? MOTTO - All for the benefit of society.

19 Conclusions Let us make a start by having seamless confluence of technology and conservation by using the energy efficient practices immediately. In this direction, let us start using only energy efficient devices from today and let other steps follow. LET US MAKE “GoHP”, ‘DRONACHARYA’ FOR HIMACHAL FOR SHOWING US THE WAY TO PROSPERITY THROUGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY - CONSERVATION Unique attributes of hydro power and its role in bringing clean renewable energy to the World need to be well-recognised & promoted by all of us for the larger interest of the community/ society. POWER
