Technology Vocabulary Part 2
engineer, prototype, want, need, design, design process, 7 steps design process, criteria, constraints, attribute
2
What is an attribute? In general, an attribute is a property or characteristic. For example, hair color is an attribute.
3
Design A creative, systematic, and iterative (repetitive) process for meeting human needs and wants, and leading to useful products and systems.
4
What is the design process?
A systematic problem-solving strategy, with criteria and constraints, used to develop many possible solutions to a problem or to satisfy human needs and wants by narrowing down the possible solutions to one final or best choice.
5
Design Attribute Concepts
A person who uses science, technology, engineering methods, and math to solve technical design problems is an engineer. Manufacturing productivity is the relationship between the number of hours worked, and the quantity of products made.
6
Design Attribute Concepts cont.
A working model of an item is called a prototype. During the design process, things that a product must do or include are called criteria.
7
Design Attribute Concepts cont.
A want is something that one desires to have, but NOT necessary to have. In the design process, limits that are placed on a design and the designer are called constraints.
8
Need We all have basic requirements for life, essential to life are food, clothing, and shelter. You may want a new cellphone but you need food, clothing, and shelter to sustain or support your life. In the design process of building a house a person might want a granite counter top or brick exterior, however, the constraint of money might prevent them getting those upgrades so they might be limited to the need of simple countertops and vinyl siding. Describe a want and need you might have for life.
9
Design Attribute Concepts cont.
The process of creating things by planning is called design. The process of designing NEW products is invention.
10
Design Attribute Concepts cont.
Electro mechanical information technology started in the1800’s, and is based upon the need to gather and store large amounts of information. Innovation is the process of improving and changing a technology that already exists.
