4 Preliminary Credential Programs
Multiple Subject (Elementary) Single Subject (Secondary) Special Education Mild/Moderate Disabilities (M/M) Moderate/Severe Disabilities (M/S) Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) All program integrate the English Learner Authorization (ELA) which prepares candidate to teach English language learners; Special Education programs include the Autism Spectrum Disorder Authorization

Teacher in California Prove you know WHAT you will teach (math, social science, PE, etc.) – “Subject Matter Competency” Prove you know HOW to teach– “teaching credential preparation program”

6 How to prove Subject Matter Competency Multiple Subject Credential
Pass a standardized test – CSET: California Subject Exam for Teachers (Elementary subject matter programs are currently going through re-approval) Three subtests (take one at a time) Subtest I – English/Social Science Subtest II – Mathematics/Science Subtest III – Visual & Preforming Arts/Physical Education/Human Development

7 How to prove Subject Matter Competency Special Education Credential Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe
Pass a standardized test – CSET: California Subject Exam for Teachers If planning on teaching at the elementary level, take the Multiple Subjects CSET Exam If planning on teaching at a secondary level, take the CSET for core single subject content area OR complete a subject matter waiver program Subject Matter competency is not required for ECSE

Two semester / Three semester options begin every fall Options for spring conditional admission to complete pre-requisite credential courses and experiences Additional Authorization: option to get the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish or Hmong added to your credential Special Education 4-5 semester part time / full time programs begin every fall Options for adding the Multiple subject credential to the Mild/ Moderate or Moderate/Severe credential

9 Pre-Requisite Courses
Courses: HLSC 136 – School Health Education EDUC 100A/B – Educating the Exceptional Learner in Inclusive Settings EDUC 170 – Introduction to Bilingual Education KINS 172 – Movement Education The pre-requisite courses are NOT admission requirements, but they must be completed prior to starting a credential program complete in a Spring Semester complete in summer school before starting the program complete a pre-requisite equivalent If you apply to take the pre-requisite courses in the Spring, you must still complete the full Teacher Preparation Program Supplemental Application for the fall Admission in the spring does not guarantee fall admission

11 Two Semester Multiple Subject Option
Designed for someone who: Already has a significant amount of teaching experience Has met all subject matter requirements Has completed/will complete all pre-requisite courses before fall Program is accelerated and required candidate to balance extensive fieldwork/student teaching responsibilities with rigorous coursework Program schedule is full time: candidate will be in schools and/or in coursework most days of the week with times starting as early as 7:30am and extending through early evening on some days

Designed for someone who: In interested in a more extended preparation experience Has met all subject matter requirements** **few admission exceptions are made for those who have not completely passed all of the required tests Has completed/will complete all pre-requisite courses before fall Three semesters of experiences in classrooms and schools (observations, one –on-one and small group work in the first semester followed by increasing teaching responsibilities in semesters 2 and 3 Coursework primarily scheduled for the first two semesters with relatively little course requirements for the third semester when teaching requirements are intense

18 Special Education Programs
Education Specialist Instruction Credentials authorize teaching in mild/moderate, moderate/severe or early childhood special education settings All specializations include the Autism Spectrum Disorder Authorization and the English Language Learner authorization All Education Specialist Credential programs can be completed in 4 semesters Full and part time options available Most classes are offered after 4:00pm Some courses offered online and/or in hybrid format Can add multiple subject credential (with additional courses) for a “dual” credential program option with the Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Credential Internships available in the final semester, if qualified

Bachelor’s Degree Subject Matter Competency California Basic Skills (CBEST) Writing Proficiency (CBEST or upper division writing course) 2.67 Minimum GPA (or 2.75 in last 60 semester units) Minimum 45 hours experience working with the age group and population of students you want to teach 2 reference forms Essay Certificate of Clearance Group Interview
