2. THE THREE STRANDS OF GEOGRAPHY
Human Geography: This is about how human activity affects or is influenced by the earth's surface, e.g. how people live in urban and rural environments. Physical Geography: This is to do with our natural world. We investigate what forces are responsible for shaping our planet. Global Issues: This is to do with geographical issues that cross boarders, e.g. pollution, environmental hazards, globalisation disease - and more!

4. Global Issues
Health: Investigate deadly diseases affecting rich and poor countries today such as malaria, heart disease and HIV/AIDS
Environmental Hazards: Earthquakes, volcanoes and hurricanes: where, when and why do they happen? What are their impacts on people and the environment?

5. Human Geography
Urban: Contrast a developed world city to a developing world city: investigate issues with housing and transport and learn what solutions can be implemented
Rural: Compare changes in the rural landscape in developed and developing nations
Population: Where do people live in the world and why? Why is the global population exploding: investigating birth rates, death rates and indicators of development

6. Physical Geography
Picture 7
Weather: Why does it rain? Why are some places hotter than others? What is air pressure? Let’s become mini meteorologists and explore what’s really controlling our weather!
Coasts: What actually happens when land meets the sea? Explore how the sea eats away at the land and how the sea is responsible for building new land for us! Learn how different coastal land uses cause conflicts between people & consider how to solve these issues
Glaciation: What is a glacier and how do they work? Identifying and exploring a range of features such as corries, arêtes, pyramidal peaks and looking at how different land uses in a glaciated area cause conflict today & consider how to cause these issues

7. assessment National 5 level:
On-going assessment throughout the year (past-paper questions & outcomes)
Three end of unit assessments: Physical, Human & Global Issues (pass/fail basis)
National 5 Assignment (25% of overall course grade)
Prelim (estimate exam)
External Exam (75% of overall course grade)
National 4 level:
On-going assessment throughout the year (quizzes and outcomes)
National 4 AVU (P/F)

8. The assignment/value added unit
National 4 pupils must complete a Value Added Unit which is internally assessed on a pass or fail basis. Pupils must pass this section in order to gain an overall award for National 4.
National 5 pupils must complete an assignment which is worth 25% of their overall course grade,. It is marked out of 20 and is graded A-D. This piece of work is completed in 1 hour under exam conditions and is then externally assessed by the SQA.

The total exam is out of 80 marks and will be graded A-D.
