SEVENTH GRADE SCIENCE PROJECTS
2
The Science Project Must be an Experiment or Engineering Design Test.
A Science Experiment: -- Includes a research paper about the topic. -- A formal lab write up, using the scientific method. -- Twenty-five to fifty trials. -- A visual display. -- An oral presentation.
3
The Science Project Must be an Experiment or Engineering Design Test.
-- Includes a research paper about the topic. -- Follows the Engineering Design Process. -- Twenty-five to trials. -- A visual display. -- An oral presentation.
4
Project must be an experiment not a demonstration.
Student must test one variable or design. Student must have a minimum of ten trials, 10 plants in each group or test at least 50 people. Except for the Independent Variable all other conditions must be controlled. Quantitative data must be collected. Students should collect lots and lots of data.
5
EXPERIMENT CHECK What is the effect of ___________________
(Independent Variable) on __________________________? (Topic or Dependent Variable) If the project does not fit into this statement, it may not be an experiment.
6
Regional and State Science Fairs
-- For Regional: should have 25 trials, 25 plants in each group, or 50 people tested. -- For State Fair: Should have 50 trials, 50 plants in each group or 50 or more people tested.
7
CHOOSE TOPIC CAREFULLY
-- Topic cannot be changed after 9/14 -- Watch expenses: - 30 to 90 plants can become expensive - special equipment needed for the test can also be expensive. -- If you are going away during Christmas vacation, you may not want to work with plants.
8
TOPICS -- Can only do psychological or taste tests on humans. -- Cannot withhold food or water from any organism. -- Cannot use primary or secondary cultures taken from humans or other warm blooded animals. -- Cannot test the effects of any food or drug on any vertebrate. -- Can only use microorganisms and tissues that are purchased from a reputable supply house. -- Can not test mold growth..
9
NO PARTNERS -- It is sometimes very difficult for the
students to work together because of different schedules and how far the students live from each other. . -- Students must work alone on their project.
10
PROOFREADING & REVISIONS
-- Proofreading will always be done. -- The first proofreading date will be 9/7. -- After the first assignment, there will also be redo dates. -- These dates will be announced after the assignment is returned. .
11
POINTS TO REMEMBER All seventh graders must attend the IJP Science Fair on 1/27/17 from 6-9 p.m. Local Fair : at least 10 trials, 10 plants or 50 people. State Fair: to 100 trials, 100 plants, or 100 people. Please call, write a note or if there are any problems. Voice Mail #
