Our vision “Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people and in the world around them…this depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.” I am talented. Reading and Phonics What is Phonics? ‘Phonics is the link between letters and the sounds they make.’ At Haydonleigh, children are taught: The full range of common letter/ sound correspondences. To hear separate sounds within words. To blend sounds together to read words. We teach the children Phonics using the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme (which works through 6 progressive phases), as well as using ‘Jolly Phonics’ in Foundation Stage. I am talented. Cracking the code… Definitions
Although there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, there are more than 40 speech sounds. There are 144 different ways we put letters together to represent the sounds. Definitions Phoneme: The smallest unit of sound in a word. Grapheme: What we write to represent a sound/ phoneme – for some ‘phonemes’, this could be more than one letter. We often refer to these as ‘sound buttons’. : For example:

Reading and Phonics Oral blending Hearing a series of spoken sounds and merging (blending) them together to make a spoken word – no text is used. For example: When children hear b/u/s, they will say bus. Blending Recognising the letter sounds in a written word, for example c-u-p, and blending them in the order which they are written, to read the word ‘cup’. I am talented. Together we are amazing.

l e g ch i p Blending to read s i t c a n
We often use our ‘robot arms’ to support the children with blending the sounds together to hear the word.

Writing and Phonics Segmenting to spell ‘Stretching’ the word to spell it out The opposite of blending Identifying the individual sounds in a spoken word (e.g. h-i-m) and writing down letters for each sound/phoneme to form the word ‘him’. I am talented. Together we are amazing.
19
Tricky words Alongside learning to blend sounds together to read words, children will also begin to learn to read ‘tricky words’. From Phase 2 onwards, our children learn different groups of ‘tricky words’ to read, and then eventually learn to write. Tricky words are those words which cannot be sounded out correctly using the Jolly Phonics sounds. The only way these words can be read and spelt correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise. There are lots of techniques we use in school and games that can be played with the children at home to help them learn these tricky words.

E-safety at Haydonleigh
At Haydonleigh Primary School, all children are taught how to stay safe and act sensibly whilst on line. We mostly deliver this through our E-Safety curriculum. This covers 8 different areas: In addition, in February every year, we take part in the National Internet Safety Day. We also ask that all children sign our Acceptable Use Policy. I am talented.
