Battle at Trenton:

4 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 17 Conviction
A noun that means a feeling of being sure that what you say or think is right. A preacher speaks with conviction.

5 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 17 Survival
A noun that means continuing to exist. If someone is lost in the desert, survival will depend on water. After a battle, the question is who has survived and how many survivors there are. The verb form is survive. Survivors is the noun form.

6 Chapter 17 First Focus: As we read together, let’s see how Matthew finds a way of asking the Indians if they have seen the Hessians and Katie.

7 Chapter 17 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete questions # 4, 6, 7 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

8 Chapter 17- Review Class Discussion
Why does Hooter think the Indians want Matthew’s shoes? Where do you think the Hessians took Katie and Q? How do you think the Indians felt when they saw the pocket video game? What do you think they will do with the batteries and the shoe buckles? Do you think Tony has a right to be angry at Matthew? Why or why not? Why did the Indians pick the berries if not to eat them? Do you think they will find Katie and Q? Why? Hooter thinks the Indians want Matthew’s shoes. As you reread with your partner, focus why he thinks that and what you might do if you were in their place.

9 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 18 Signal
A noun or a verb that means an action that is used to provide information. I could turn on my blinker to signal that I’m turning. Ships sometimes use flags as signals. The Indians used smoke signals to carry information quickly over a long distance.

10 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 18 Formidable
An adjective that means causing fear or respect through being large or powerful. Sometimes we have to face formidable problems if we want to succeed. Football players prepare carefully to play a formidable team.

11 Chapter 18 First Focus – Discussion
The Indians are leading Matthew, Hooter, and Tony through the woods to find Q and Katie, who have been kidnapped by the Hessians. This is an exciting part of the story. As we read together, let’s focus on exactly what happens. Read Chapter 18

12 Chapter 18 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 4, 7 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

13 Chapter 18- REVIEW First Focus – Discussion Why do you think the Indians did not stay and fight the Hessians? Why did Matthew say they should have courage and pick up a big stick? Would you have had the courage to face the Hessians? Why do you think the Hessian soldier searched Q’s pockets? Why do you think the soldier swallowed the gum instead of trying to blow a bubble like Q did? Why did the Hessian call Q a rebel when he took the dollar from Hooter’s pocket? How do you think Q and Katie feel when they see the other campers? The Indians have put on war paint but do not stay to fight. As you reread with your partner, think about things from the Indians point of view.

14 Chapter 19 Let’s Review: Adam Hibbs was Q’s grandfather’s boyhood friend who disappeared in the rowboat and never came back. When the boys run into Adam Hibbs in the 1700s, he says that his grandfather stayed there because his grandmother was so pretty. His grandson would have been born around 1750 in order to be a young rebel (if he stayed there): “He told his grandson the whole story and young Adam has been looking out for the old boat ever since he was a boy.” This might make sense if he started looking for the boat at age 10 and is now 20. The book does not give his age, mentioning only that he is young. (He dies in Chapter16 by his own bayonet.)

15 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 19 Bewildered -an adjective that means confused.
Sometimes I’m bewildered when I hear something I can’t explain. I find it bewildering.

16 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 19 Divert
A verb that means to change course or turn attention away from one thing to another thing. If you don’t do your work, you might try to divert me by telling a joke. Of course, it won’t work. I would not be diverted. The noun form is diversion.

17 Chapter 19 First Focus Matthew throws a stick at one of the Hessians, who has drawn his sword and is about to charge Hooter. The stick hits Hooter instead and cuts his head. As we read together, let’s see how these events are described.

18 Chapter 19 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 5, 6 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

19 Chapter 19- REVIEW Why do you think the Hessians didn’t kill the children? Why do you think Gustav took charge of the children? What would have happened to them if the redheaded Hessian soldier had been in charge of them? Do you think Matthew will keep his promise to get them back home? Gustav was the enemy, so why do you think Hooter gave him one of his Band-Aids? Why do you think Gustav told them his name? Why do you think Gustav looked confused when they got to the river? Why do you think Gustav risked his life to save Katie? Why do you think the rebel soldiers shot Gustav in the back? What does this tell you about them?

20 Chapter 19- REVIEW As you reread with your partner, think about events from the point of view of poor Gustav. Think about how has saved Katie and about how he suddenly cries out in pain and falls dead in the snow.

21 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 20 Awestruck
A noun meaning a feeling of great respect for someone or something. Meeting a famous person might fill you with awe. You would be awestruck.

22 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 20 Solemn
An adjective that means very formal and serious. Funerals are solemn events. If you speak in a solemn way, you are being very serious. It’s not a time for jokes. The noun form is solemnity.

23 Chapter 20 First Focus The rebel soldiers think the children are spies. They find a dollar bill in Tony’s pocket and decide that it is false currency used by spies in case they are captured. As we read together, focus on what you might have done had you been there.

24 Chapter 20 Chapter 20, p.142, says “if I can ever be of service to you, please call on me” George Washington remembers that Matthew returned his cloak and knows that the children are not spies. Now we can see why that detail was so important for the author to include. It did not seem important at the time it happened, but it is really important now. Sometimes we can't determine what is important until we have the whole story.

25 Chapter 20 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 1, 4 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

26 Chapter 20- Review Why did the corporal think that Patriots could not be grateful to the enemy? What do you think would have happened if the rebel soldiers noticed the date on Tony’s dollar bill? Why do you think the rebel soldiers were laughing after having killed Gustav? How do you think Matthew feels after seeing men that he thought were special and brave acting neither special nor brave? Do you think Matthew was surprised to see the pouch with the glass beads in it? Do you think the rebel soldier would have believed Matthew’s story?

27 Chapter 20- Review Do you think the rebel soldier would give the beads to Matthew or promise to see that Israel’s sister got them? Why or why not? Why do you think George Washington gave Katie his extra pair of socks? Do you think he should have given them to one of his soldiers who was barefoot in the snow? Do you think Abigail Gates will get the glass beads? Matthew says that there are good guys and bad guys on both sides of the war. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Do you think that called George Washington’s Socks is a good title for this book?

28 Chapter 20- Review George Washington gives Katie his extra pair of socks. As you reread with your partner, think about the title of the book and how we know now why it was called George Washington’s Socks.

29 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 21 Anxiety
A noun that means a feeling of worry or nervousness. If you are feeling anxiety, you are worried that something bad will happen but you may not be sure exactly what. Before a test, some students are anxious. The adjective form is anxious.

30 Vocabulary ~ Chapter 21 Vanish A verb that means to disappear.
We often use this word if we are surprised. When the magician made the rabbit vanish, we were surprised.

31 Chapter 21 First Focus – The boys sit on a rock thinking about home. As we read together, put yourself in their place. See if what they are thinking is what you might have been thinking if you’d been there.

32 Chapter 21 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 2, 5, 6 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

33 Chapter 21-REVIEW Why can’t Katie resist disobeying orders?
Why is Q horrified when Katie decides to put on George Washington’s socks? Why does Q want George Washington’s socks? Why does Katie take so long to tell them she knows where the rowboat is? Why do you think Katie was the first one in the boat?

34 Chapter 21-REVIEW Why do you think Q said that he would not be surprised if the rowboat took them someplace warm? Why do you think George Washington does not believe that the children have vanished? When George Washington got his feet wet, do you think he regretted giving his extra socks to Katie? How did Matthew know they were not in the Delaware River anymore?

35 Chapter 21-REVIEW Matthew realizes that they are not on the freezing Delaware River anymore. As you reread with your partner, think about what conclusions Matthew is reaching.

36 Chapter 22 First Focus: The campers are not sure if they are in the right place in the right year. As we read together, let’s focus on their confusion – and how bewildered they must be!

37 Chapter 22 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 1, 4, 5 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.

38 Chapter 22-REVIEW Why do you think the rowboat took them back home?
How do you think the campers felt when the paper Matthew found was a potato chip bag? Do you think their parents noticed that the campers were missing? Why do the campers think it is best not to tell their parents about the time travel adventure? Would you believe their story? Why or why not?

39 Chapter 22-REVIEW Why didn’t Matthew throw away the shoes that Mr. Hornbee gave him? Do you think it was wise for Q to take the socks to his house? Why? The first thing Hooter wants when he gets home is food. Tony wants a bath and clean clothes, Q wants to frame the socks, and Matthew wants to read a book. What would you want to do first if you had been with them?

40 Chapter 22-REVIEW The campers hike back to Tony’s backyard and discuss what they will do first when they get back to their own homes. As you reread with your partner, think about what you might have done. Compare your ideas with what the children were thinking.

41 Chapter 23 First Focus: Matthew goes home and picks up a book. Then he turns on the air conditioner, his tape player, his reading lamp, and his clock radio. As we read together, focus on why he does these things and think about what you might do.

42 Chapter 23 Why did Matthew turn on all the things in his room that use electricity? Do you think Matthew’s parents are worried when he says that club meetings must be kept a secret? Why or why not? After Katie mentioned the socks, their parents looked to Matthew for an explanation. He said, “The truth is that we were reading a book about George Washington.” How was he being truthful but not really truthful at the same time?

43 Chapter 23 Why don’t their parents believe that Katie is telling the truth? Would you believe her? Why or why not? What do you think will happen when Mr. Carlton opens the sugar bowl? Why do you think the author added the last sentence about the sugar bowl? How important is it to the story? Would you have ended the book any differently?

44 Chapter 23 As you reread with your partner, think about how the author has brought the book to a close and whether you would have ended it any differently. Think about if you were the author, how would you start the first chapter of a second book?

45 Chapter 23 Answer all questions with 7-Up sentences and use evidence from the text.
Complete question # 1, 2 When you are finished with your questions, try to answer the other questions.
