The Irish Economy Ulster Bank upgraded real GDP growth forecasts in August to 3.1% for the year (1% higher than previous estimates). Real GDP growth of 3.2% expected for 2015 Average unemployment rate at peak of 14.7% in Expected to average 11.5% for 2014 and 10.4% for 2015 01 06 Improved export performance – Assisted by strengthening trading partners, namely US and UK, and improved trends in pharma-chem sector Increased home building activity is turning what was a headwind factor for the economy into a tailwind 02 07 Exports grew a subdued 1.1% in 2013, and expected to grow 5% for 2014 Public finances close to €1bn ahead (0.5% of GDP) at end of July, with Ireland on track to record general government deficit of under 4% of GDP (vs plan of 4.8% and ceiling set by Europe of 5.1%) 03 08 Strengthening economy becoming more broad based – With positive export growth, and expanding consumer spending and investment. First time since 2007 that all three key areas grew together Downside risks come from the potential for further disappointment in the Euro Zone recovery and from international geopolitical tensions 04 09 Stronger than expected 2.4% rise in employment in 2013, with 2% forecast for 2014 and 2015 05 Slide 4
