Near Earth Orbit Detector and Characterization (NEODaC) Detector
Engineering Development Unit Focal Plane Array – 4 Active Detectors, 4 Dummy Detectors NEODaC instrument CCD from HST >75 Million Pixels Silicon Carbon baseplate, extremely flat and dimensionally stable Modular design, easy integration and alignment Individual thermal control, excellent stability, supports cryogenic operating temperature

New Sensor For NEODaC Being Developed to Demonstrate Performance
For the NEODaC project, Raytheon Vision Systems is providing a new visible sensor for low-light applications CMOS ROIC with thinned Si sensor provides radiation-hardness Easily mosaicked since all key interfaces are digital Si sensor technology benefits from all the process improvements put into CCDs over the years A mosaic of 3x2 devices, each 4K x 4K with 10 mm pixel pitch, can cover the entire FGS field of view Provides imaging from the near-UV through the visible. Thermoelectric cooling can support dark current less than 0.1 e-/sec The device can also operate very fast (up to 100 Hz frame rates), opening up potential applications in time-resolved imaging

Where Do We Go from Here? We have within our reach the solutions to the engineering problems facing HST With our national investment in launch vehicles and commercial space flight and crew, we have the long range capability to make this happen But you must WANT IT! And speak out for such a cost-effective near-term solution to a UV-optical telescope!
