3 Let’s Talk About Labels
Certification Office CTE Teacher Certification - Trade & Technical titles including Health Occupations (others are referred to as classroom teacher titles) Highly Qualified Teacher - A teacher who is appropriately certified to deliver instruction in a particular course Approved Program Pathway A college teacher prep program that culminates in a recommendation from the college for certification CTE Office CTE Teacher Certification - Agriculture, Business, FACS, Health Occupations, Technology, Trade & Tech Highly Qualified Teacher - A CTE teacher who also holds a certification in Math, Science, ELA, Social Studies, and/or Art (formerly HOUSSE) Approved Program & Graduation Pathways A High School CTE program of study that has been approved by SED & series of courses and experiences that fulfill NYSED graduation requirements

5 Transitional A Pathways To Certification
Option A: Associate Degree & 2 years work experience Option B: High School Diploma & 4 years work experience Option C: Associate Degree & 2 years college teaching experience Option D: NYS Full Private Career School Teacher License and 2 years teaching exp.

6 Transitional A’s Continued
Option G: Industry Credential & 2 years work experience Option H: Enrolled in an approved CTE program, & 1 year work experience or a passing score on an industry accepted CTE exam Option I: Currently certified 7-12 CTE teacher with 2 years work experience or industry-recognized credentials in another CTE area Note: All of these teachers must also complete the workshops, fingerprint clearance and have an employment and support commitment in NY.

7 Teacher Registration Requirements
Beginning on July 1, 2016 Certificate holders must select a Registration Status This applies to: see handout #1 Permanent or Professional School Leaders Permanent or Professional Classroom Teachers Level III Teaching Assistants A certificate holder’s status can be either “Registered” or “Inactive” How do I sign up? see demonstration Go to your TEACH account at Registration Beginning on July 1, 2016, any holder of a certificate that is valid for life must select a Registration status, Registered or Inactive, during the school year. Certificate holders choose a registration status based on their employment status. Holders of the following certificate types must choose a registration status: Permanent or Professional School Leaders Permanent or Professional Classroom Teachers Level III Teaching Assistants Employment status: Certificate holders are required to maintain a status of “Registered” if they are practicing in a New York State school district or Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).  Practicing means employed 90 days or more during a school year by a single applicable school in New York in a position requiring certification.  Certificate holders may choose a status of “Inactive” if they are not practicing in a NYS school district or BOCES. 

8 Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) Requirements
Teachers are required to complete 100 hrs. of CTLE   CTLE must be rigorous and taken from Approved Sponsors CTLE must be in Content, Pedagogy or Language Acquisition CTLE records must be maintained for at least three years from the end of the registration period 15% of the CTLE Requirement must be dedicated to language acquisition addressing the needs of English Language Learners. Exception: Cert holders with the “English to speakers of other languages (all grades)” or a “bilingual extension” must complete 50% in Language Acquisition Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) Certificate holders will be required to complete CTLE if they are required to Register and hold a Professional Classroom Teacher, Professional School Leader certificate or Level III Teaching Assistant.  Facts about CTLE: CTLE must be rigorous and taken from Approved Sponsors CTLE must be in Content, Pedagogy or Language Acquisition 15% of the 100-Hour CTLE Requirement must be dedicated to language acquisition addressing the needs of English Language Learners. A CTLE certificate holder who holds a professional certificate in the certificate title of English to speakers of other languages (all grades) or a bilingual extension must complete 50% of their 100-Hour CTLE requirement dedicated to language acquisition addressing the needs of English Language Learners.

15 Additional Certification Pathway

16 Supplementary Certificate
Similar to the Additional Certificate Pathway except: 12 credit hours of content in the additional certificate area School sponsor who is willing to hire them Only valid when teaching in the sponsoring school Only valid for three years

17 Option A An associate degree or its equivalent in the career and technical field in which a certificate is sought and 2 years of work experience career and technical field in which a certificate is sought

18 Option B A High School Diploma and 4 years of work experience in the career & technical field in which a certificate is sought

19 Option C Associate degree or its equivalent in the career & technical field in which a certificate is sought and 2 years of satisfactory teaching experience, excluding experience as a teaching assistant, at the post-secondary level in the certificate area to be taught or in a closely related subject area acceptable to the department

20 Option D Hold a valid NYS Full Private Career School Teacher License in the career and technical field in which a certificate is sought and has worked under that license for 2 years

21 Option G Hold an industry acceptable credential in a career and technical education subject and have at least two years of acceptable work experience in the certificate area to be taught or in a closely related subject area acceptable to the department

22 Option H Enrolled in a NYS approved career and technical education program registered pursuant to section of this Title, or its equivalent in the certificate area to be taught or in a closely related subject area and have either: at least one year or satisfactory work experience in the career and technical area to be taught or in a closely related area or receive a passing score on an industry accepted career and technical examination that demonstrates mastery in the career and technical education subject for which a certificate is sought or a closely related area as approved by the department through a request for qualifications process

23 Option I Currently certified 7-12 grade teachers in any CTE subject area, and have at least two years of acceptable work experience in the certificate area to be taught or in a closely related subject area acceptable to the department, or who hold industry-recognized credentials, where available.

24 HOUSSE Highly Objective Uniform State Standard of Evaluation Note: This no longer applies as it was part of the past NCLB legislation
