2 A BIT OF HISTORY… Jamaica is a country and an island in America, belonging to the Greater Antilles, located in the Caribbean Sea. The island gained independence on August 6, With 2.8 million people, it is the third most populous country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. The official language of Jamaica is English, the currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar and the capital of Jamaica is Kingston.

3 SPORTS IN JAMAICA Apart from music, sport is one of Jamaica's largest leisures. The most popular sports are athletics, cricket, football and netball.

4 THE BOBSLEIGH The bobsleigh is an Olympic winter sport that together with the luge (Light sleigh) and the skeleton (Simple sled) represent different modalities of descent in sled. Like the luge and the skeleton, its origin is situated in the Swiss Alps in the late nineteenth century. The world's first bobsleigh club was founded in 1897 in Switzerland and from there spread to other parts of Europe. The first competitions were celebrated in The International Federation of Bobsleigh was founded in 1923.

5 Winter Olympic Games Jamaica is the first tropical country to have ever participated in the Winter Olympic Games. The Devon Harris team, Dudley Stokes, Michael White, Freddy Powell and Chris Stokes made their Olympic debut in the bobsleigh sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary Canada. The Jamaica bobsleigh team has qualified for the Winter Olympics again in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2014. In 2000 the Jamaica Bobsleigh team won the gold medal at the World Push Championship in Monoco, Italy. At the 2002 Winter Olympics the Winston Watts and Lascelles Brown team set an Olympic record of 4.78 seconds for the two-man race push out segment.

Cool Runnings or Jamaica Under Zero is a 1993 American film directed by Jon Turteltaub. It is based on the true story of the participation of the Jamaican bobsleigh team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.
