S.M.A.R.T Cookies 11/19/2016

2 Let’s Start Here… An Olympic Pool with Goals…Gold Medalist Michael Phelps and his pathway to the Gold Medal #1-Take your focus off results and put it on activities #2-Gold Medal is the motivation #3- His focus is on getting every move right

3 Result Goals is MOTIVATING them to reach their overall goal.
Motivation VS. Focus Include BOTH types of goal setting with your troop but implement them differently. Result Goals is MOTIVATING them to reach their overall goal. Action Goals should be FOCUSED on what they must act on to have the best chances of reaching their overall goal.

4 What’s in the SPECIFIC Cookie?
Food for thought… What if we helped her focus on the outcome of her actions in selling that box and not just the outcome of her sales results? Let’s get Specific … Result-Specific would say…Trip to NYC 2018 Action-Specific would say…Talk to 25 people this week about cookies.

5 How can the Cookie be MEASURED?
Measure your success by keeping Action Goals in your pocket and Result Goals in your meetings… Action Goals look like… Check off each box that represents a house visited each day to meet my weekly cookie business goals. (Q: Pocket Goals-what are those?) Results Goals look like…$500 per girl for the NYC Trip. (Q: Poster Goals?)

6 What does the ATTAINABLE Cookie look like?
An attainable cookie has realistic ingredients focused on girls working to sell a goal number of boxes sold for the week and action ingredients work to keep her motivated on completing her daily or weekly sales interaction goals.

7 Does this look like a REALISTIC Cookie?
The cookie might look pretty sweet, but it all comes down to what can you really accomplish with your time availability and accountability network. (This is the World’s Largest Cookie baked in May It was 8,120 sq. Feet across) Result Realistic looks like…reaching for a troop and per girl goal. Action Realistic looks like…track what you have already accomplished along the way!

8 How much TIME does this Cookie need before it’s “Goal-done” brown?
Just remember, there are more opportunities to fundraise outside of cookies, but with the SMART Cookie recipe Girls can reach MOST IF NOT ALL of goals for the year! The Right Recipe Takes Time… Result Timed Cookies look like…Set a Date! Action Timed Cookies look like…Host a “Track My Cookie” mini-meeting.

9 Questions?

10 Make sure your decisions are Girl-Led
So they’ve set their own goals, and now they have to decide where, when and how they want to sell. Allow time for open discussion Teach, monitor and model a safe space for girls to discuss their ideas Think outside the box – older girls find it hard to sell so think of ways to help them Bulk buying opportunities Remember the Gift of Caring – it’s a meaningful way to help, and it’s a way to get people involved who say “I don’t eat cookies” or “I’m on a diet!” Confidential and Proprietary - Not for Public Distribution - Do Not Copy

11 What is a Safe Space? This sounds good – how do I create a Safe Space?
A Safe Space is a place where anyone can relax and be able to fully express, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or unsafe. It is a space where rules guard each person’s self respect, and encourage everyone to respect others. This sounds good – how do I create a Safe Space? With the help of your Girl Scouts, create rules that they would be happy to follow: they will come up with great ideas! Make sure to encourage everyone’s ideas, and even though some may not be what you were aiming for, validate them and lead the conversation where you want it to go from there. If you have more questions about Safe Spaces and their use in many situations – please contact me! Benefits of a Safe Space Girls feel empowered to express themselves freely It breaks down exclusive barriers It encourages diversity of perspectives – a great life lesson It builds stronger, deeper relationships between peers Confidential and Proprietary - Not for Public Distribution - Do Not Copy

12 Helpful Decision-Making Methods
Discussion-based decision making Lay all the options out and allow for discussions of the pros & cons of each – maybe one huge activity will take up all of the cookie money, but they’d be able to earn a journey. Or maybe 3 smaller activities would allow girls to experience 3 brand-new things that they’re keen to try. - While both are worthwhile, allow the girls to discuss which ones are most important to them right now, and why. Democratic Voting Use the recent election as an example to show girls the importance of democracy! If you have a few options on what to spend the cookie money on, you can hold an anonymous ballot vote. You could even choose a few representatives to explain why they should vote for certain things. 14 Activity Debrief What went well? What could be done better next time?
Was everyone’s opinion heard? Consider using the “Stepladder Technique”: Ask the group to think of solutions/ideas individually One at a time, introduce new ideas to the “group leader” – this could be you, a co-leader or maybe an older girl When the first two ideas are introduced and discussed, the leader brings in a third person, who presents their ideas to be discussed. Add a 4th, discuss, then add another until everyone has been heard. Confidential and Proprietary - Not for Public Distribution - Do Not Copy
