8 What you are about to hear is the opinion of Jim Andersen and does not necessarily reflect the viewpoints or opinions of Merced College or the C/ML Region.

9 Never forget it’s always about what’s good for the students and community.
“If it’s good for students and the community, then it’s worth championing”

10 Build trusting relationships
No one is perfect but the better we are at these things, the more effective a leader we will be and the more success our students will achieve! Build trusting relationships “The better the relationship is the more trust folks will have in you and the more you can accomplish”

11 Be a good listener – (Even when it is painful to do so
Be a good listener – (Even when it is painful to do so.) This can be very time consuming at first, but it’s time well spent! Be respectful – (Even when you want to let someone have it) Steer clear of gossiping. Do what you say you are going to do. Don’t BS people. If you don’t know, say “I don’t know” and then go find the answer.

12 Apologize when you screw up and make it right if at all possible.
Family First – There’s and yours. Lead by Example. “Don’t expect others to do something you would do”. “Never expect your folks to work harder than you do” This is an “Us thing” not a “You or I thing”.

13 When implementing change, I have found;
“You can seldom please (or change) everyone all at one time, so pick where you will invest your greatest efforts (who has the most potential to come on board) and “begin moving the needle” in those areas with those folks. “I have found those resistant to change are more likely to climb aboard when they see positive results happening in other areas.

14 I have learned over the past 34 years in education;
“Be in this for the long run, changeing the direction of a ship is a slow process” I have learned over the past 34 years in education; “You have to believe in what your doing” and have the passion and fortitude to carry it through to completion. “Never reinvent the wheel…” If you want to be successful, find successful people and pick their brain, then improve what they have done if need be.

15 “If you can’t beat them then you just out last them”
“You need to laugh” With your coworkers, both fellow managers, as well as with the faculty and staff you work with.” “Don’t become so serious that the joy of what you are doing gets sucked out of you!”

16 Loosely Translated Means
“Illegitimi non carborundum” A Latin phrase that Loosely Translated Means “Don’t let the bastards grind you down!”
