A Journey Through The Psalms
Wisdom From God A Journey Through The Psalms
2
Psalm 32– Relief From Repentance
Line from a popular hymn: “Oh what peace we often forfeit – oh what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” That loss of peace and needless pain can be the result of sin which we have tried to hide rather than confessing to God and repenting.
3
The Burden Of Unconfessed Sin
Think of unconfessed sin as a festering wound. The longer it goes untreated, the more dire the wound becomes. Eventually, death can result from untreated wounds. That is the power of sin
4
David the Sinner Psalm likely written following his sin against Uriah and Bathsheba and after Nathan’s visit. 2 Samuel 12:9-10 – “Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with a sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon. Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.”
5
The Curse Of Secret Sin Psalm 32:3-4 – “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer.”

David’s Sin Experience For Us
Charles Spurgeon said, “There is no man…but has seen himself in David’s psalms as in a looking-glass, and has said to himself, ‘This man knows all about me. He has been into every room of my soul – into its lowest cellar and into its loftiest tower; he has been with me in the dens of my inbred sin and in the palaces of my fellowship with Christ, from which I have looked upon the glory of God.’”
7
The character of this psalm
Though David was harshly punished by God for his sin, the psalm reflects a certain peace, trust, and even jubilation from David at the relief of confessed sin. The Psalm soars to heights of joy in the knowledge of God’s forgiveness for our sins.
8
Contentment And Gratitude
Psalm 32:1 – “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit!”
9
High Praise For God’s Grace
Two beatitudes How blessed the one forgiven How blessed the one who the Lord does not impute iniquity. Impute = to weave, to form, to compute Iniquity = perversity, evil, mischief, sin
10
Confessing To God Psalm 32:5-6: “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’; and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found; surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him.”
11
God Encourages Confession
He knows our sin – by confession we’re acknowledging that we too know we’ve sinned. He punishes at times to bring us to that soul- relieving point of confession of our sins.
12
2 Chronicles 6:26-27: Solomon’s Dedication
“When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin when You afflict them; then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and Your people Israel, indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people for an inheritance.”
13
God My Hiding Place This is one case in which David wasn’t hiding from other enemies. He needed to hide himself in God from his own grief and disappointment over his own sins. He’d murdered one of his best friends because of coveting his wife and committing adultery with her resulting in a pregnancy. And everybody knew it. That’s a lot to live down.
14
Refuge in God Verse 7 – “You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance.” God provides for us: Refuge Preservation Soothing
15
The Grand Conclusion Two verses from God to David
Verses 8-9 – “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding, whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, otherwise they will not come near to you.” Don’t be like an old mule!
16
Words of Highest Praise
Verses – “Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but he who trusts in the Lord, lovingkindness shall surround him. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones; and shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.”
17
Five Things To Ponder We all sin. While sins may be graded by men, God sees all sin alike. God forgives. Secret sin is not truly secret. You know and God knows and others may easily find out. The only One we need to confess to is God. Though confessing to one another can bring great assistance in our battle against sin. Temporary shame beats eternity in hell. God will soothe our consciences if we repent.
