Figure 1 Chronological order of procedures. This demonstrates the chronological order of procedures of the experiments carried out as a cross-over study in six cats. Baseline measurements were taken of all parameters measured. Each cat then received by IM injection one of the following treatments: midazolam 0.4 mg kg−1 and butorphanol 0.4 mg kg−1 (MB); midazolam 0.4 mg kg−1, butorphanol 0.4 mg kg−1 and ketamine 3 mg kg−1 (MBK); midazolam 0.4 mg kg−1, butorphanol 0.4 mg kg−1 and dexmedetomidine 5 μg kg−1 (MBD); ketamine 3 mg kg−1 and dexmedetomidine 5 μg kg−1(KD). Sedation was scored over the first 10 minutes. At 10 minutes after injection echocardiography was performed, followed by SAP measurement and blood sampling. Measurements were complete approximately 45 minutes after drug injection. Time to and quality of recovery were measured. Figure 2 Box plot of sedation scores measured over 10 minutes (AUC) following the IM injection of four different drug combinations to six cats. The box and the line represent the interquartile range and the median, respectively; the wiskers indicate minimum and maximum. abDifferent superscripts differ significantly. For protocol, drug combinations and doses see Fig. 1.
