1 Objectives LO: I can convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa using diagrams.

2 Steps to Success convert – to change from one form to another
mixed number – a whole number and a fraction improper fraction – a fraction larger than one whole; the numerator is larger than the denominator

3 Improper Fractions A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. They are BIG HEADED!! 8 = 4

4 Write the improper fraction:
Numerator.. How many parts do we have in total? 7 4 = Denominator.. How many parts as EACH whole been split into?

5 Write the improper fraction:
Numerator.. How many parts do we have in total? 11 2 = Denominator.. How many parts as EACH whole been split into?

6 1 Mixed Numbers 3 = 4 They’re a bit mixed up!
A mixed number has a part that is a whole and a part that is a fraction. They’re a bit mixed up! 3 1 = 4

7 Write the mixed number:
How many wholes are there? How many fractions/parts are there? 1 3 = 2

8 Write the mixed number:
How many wholes are there? How many fractions/parts are there? 2 2 = 3

9 Task 1 1) Circle the improper fractions 2) Circle the mixed numbers

10 CHANGE: An Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number
4 1 1 PAIRS: Can you change this improper fraction? = 3 3 Use a Diagram to help you!! How many wholes? And how many parts are left over?

11 Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number:
Use a Diagram to help you!! 5 1 2 2 2

12 Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number:
7 1 2 3 3 Use a Diagram to help you!!

13 Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number:
If there is no remainder then your answer is a whole number! 10 2 5

14 CHALLENGE… Have a go at blue section 2 (Converting the other way!!)
Task 2 P.98 Blue Section 1 Only. 5 mins! Get going! CHALLENGE… Have a go at blue section 2 (Converting the other way!!)

15 CHANGE: A mixed number to Improper Fraction
Multiply the whole number by the denominator Add your answer to the numerator Put that number on top of the denominator 1 5 2 = 2 2 The denominator always stays the SAME!

16 Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
1) Multiply 2) Add 3) On top! 1 9 4 2 2

17 Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
1) Multiply 2) Add 3) On top! 2 11 3 3 3

18 Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
2 12 2 5 5

19 Task 3 P.98 Blue Section 2. CHALLENGE… - Green circle - all sections.
- Read the questions carefully!
