FOCUS QUESTION: What are equivalent fractions?
Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott
5
Equivalent fractions are fractions that show the same amount, but have different numerators and denominators. 1 2 1 1 = 4 1 2 4 2 4 Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott
6
FOCUS QUESTION: How can I use multiplication to get an equivalent fraction?

7
= 1 2 x x You can multiply to get equivalent fractions.
To get equal fractions, multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. 1 x = 2 x Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott

FOCUS QUESTION: How do you reduce fractions?
Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott
15
When you reduce a fraction, you try to get it to the simplest form.
To get a fraction in simplest form, you must by the divide the numerator and denominator by the greatest common factor. 8 ÷ = ÷ 12 Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott

FOCUS QUESTION: How do we compare fractions with different denominators?
Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott
27
There are two ways to compare fractions with different denominators.
Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott
28
If fractions do not have the same denominators, we need to find a common multiple and multiply to get the bottoms the same. 2 3 4 8 Copyright © 2013 Kelly Mott

Improper Fractions
48
To express a mixed number as an improper fraction,
multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. Write this sum over the denominator.
49
2 2 x 2 + 1 = = 2 2 2

51
To express an improper fraction as a mixed number,
Divide the denominator into the numerator. Subtract what was “used” Write the remainder over the original denomiator
52
2 2 3 2 = 3 3 -6 2
53
Express the mixed number as an improper fraction.
= = 5
