2. Commvault Expands Enterprise Application Protection Capabilities with the Commvault Data Platform and Nutanix
We’re here today because Commvault recently announced (October 20, 2015) new innovations in the Commvault Data Platform to extend snapshot management capabilities to include the Nutanix Xtreme Computing Platform (XCP). Through the innovation of Commvault’s new software, Commvault and Nutanix are able to help joint enterprise customers address the evolving challenges of managing data and information in highly changing, fast-paced global business environments.
The object of today’s call is to give you a brief review of both Commvault and Nutanix, why the partnership important to you and your customers, an detailed overview of the solution, and to address any questions or concerns you may have.

For those of you who are not familiar with Nutanix, they are an industry-leading provider of next-generation enterprise computing. They are a private, venture-funded vendor of new-generation technology called converged infrastructure that enables Web-scale infrastructure for the enterprise customer. According to Nutanix, this web-scale infrastructure is a better approach to designing, building, and managing datacenter infrastructure pioneered by web companies and cloud providers such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, and eliminates the cost and complexity of standalone SAN and NAS.
Since they started shipping products in the 4th quarter of 2011, they have captured nearly 52% of the fast growing market of “hyperconverged” data centers, and are positioned as a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Integrated Systems [August 2015 Report.] They are a global company that takes a software-defined approach with web-scale technology providing a scalable architecture that integrates the compute, storage and virtualization tiers into a single platform. This software-driven architecture takes advantage of low-cost, off-the-shelf services, by delivering the storage and application management services all in the software.
The Nutanix complete 2U cluster contains up to four nodes. Each node in the cluster contains memory, CPU, RAM and storage (both SSD & HDD). Each node in the cluster runs a hypervisor, such as vSphere Hyper-V, or their own Acropolis Hypervisor; it scales quickly and easily with the addition of nodes and/or clusters. <CLICK>
Their software-driven Xtreme Computing Platform natively converges this compute, virtualization and storage into a single solution to drive simplicity in the datacenter. As you can see here, the Nutanix Xtreme Computing Platform is actually comprised of two products: Prism, which is a consumer-grade management tool for all of the Nutanix infrastructure; and Acropolis, which is the turn-key convergence of node components: compute, storage and virtualization.
 Nutanix supports SAP, Oracle, SQL, Exchange, and other critical applications. Their value is in virtualizing and optimizing the critical workloads. <CLICK>

What does this have to do with Commvault?
Nutanix tells us that their customers need data protection; they want support for snapshots and streaming backups to cover their infrastructure across all hypervisors.  Customers need solutions that deploy infrastructure in their virtualized environment in a predictable, scalable and operational efficient manner with data protection. So of course, one industry-leader came to another!
As you all should already know, Commvault has been a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances…5 years in a row! We are a leading provider of data protection and information management solutions that help customers activate their data to drive more value and business insight, and to transform modern data environments. We also recently announced the eleventh version of Commvault’s solutions portfolio, which is comprised of data protection and recovery, cloud, virtualization, archive, and file sync and sharing, all on a single platform.

Why should you care?
For one, hyperconverged is the hot, new direction that datacenters are moving toward. For another, many companies [90%, according to ESG Trend Report]have plans to replace or augment traditional file and application level backup with snapshots, replication, or both. According to an ESG Trend report, 1/3rd of the companies they surveyed will change backup vendors due to cost, complexity, and/or capability.

Commvault is sold the same as always. There is no Commvault Nutanix SKU, and no appliance. You’re either talking about cSIM or Capacity, however you’re structuring the deal. This is really more of a solution between partners; like “how do I make these two things run?”, rather than two products sold together as a bundle or a discounted package deal.
Just a note here: Cloud Orchestration is a new license as of the latest price file release on November 16th. It replaces the former Commvault VM Provisioning license. It includes self-service cloud provisioning and automation for production workloads being created in a cloud compute environment, and is sold on a per Operating Instance (OI) basis in 10-packs. Cloud Orchestration is a standalone product that can be used in non-Commvault environments without any additional data protection SKUS.
Essentially, this new license enables customers to purchase only what they need, lowering the pricing and maintenance significantly.

Q: When will AHV streaming backup support via VSA be available? A: Support for Acropolis Hypervisor was added in V11, Service Pack 3
Q: Do I need V11 to protect VMs on Nutanix today? A: No, you can use regular VSA integration today for VMware and Hyper-V deployments, or Agent- In-Guest for AHV. IntelliSnap support is V11 only.
Q: Which Hypervisors are supported for IntelliSnap? A: Initially, VMware only with Hyper-V support in SP2. Acropolis Hypervisor will be added in a future release
