This presentation should be delivered as a lesson to prepare your students before they attend Skills London. This will help maximise the benefits of attending. Have a discussion with the class on careers (e.g. What skills/hobbies they have? What they would like to do after school or college? How they could use the event to find out more information and speak to employers in the area).

WHAT IS SKILLS LONDON 2016 It’s an awe-inspiring interactive and hands on jobs and careers event for young people. Skills London is an inspirational and interactive event promoting careers, skills, training including apprenticeships, traineeships, advice, guidance and information to young people in Year 11 and above in school and college groups and aged 15 and above in family groups. The event aims to inspire, inform and educate young people about the options available whatever their abilities or ambitions and showcase London and national opportunities using hands-on demonstrations and activities in a fun and vibrant atmosphere.

Skills London offers a chance to try new skills, discover careers, meet employers and get inspired with interactive hands-on demos so students can get involved. Test your physical skills and strength with active careers Get a make over and find out about the range of careers and training available in the hair and beauty industries Learn catering skills and take away inspiration for a role in hospitality Investigate careers in forensics and crime scene Get to handle reptiles and find out about careers with animals and the environment Test your IT knowledge and discover routes into finance, IT and business Get creative with App and game development and turn hobbies into businesses Find out more online:

GETTING AROUND THE EVENT
When you arrive, open your event guide to see a map of the floor plan. Decide which of the seven zones below you want to visit. Take notice of the carpet and stand colours. These along with the huge ceiling banners determine which zone you are in, so you shouldn’t get lost, but if you do, just visit the Helpdesk.

Find the organisations you want to visit by taking note of their stand number in the event guide and locating them on floor plan map. Each stand has their stand number on the front of their name panel. In depth information on each zone can be found in the event guide and on our website here: Researching online beforehand is a great way to ensure you’re fully prepared and can get the most out of your time at the show.

SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO Don’t miss out on visiting the Get Skilled stands. These are fun interactive activities that give you a chance to immerse yourself into an actual job. Delivered by top employers and colleges situated in each zone, you’ll get to try out loads of new skills to help decide your career path. You’ll also get to talk to apprentices about how they got their placement as well as expert careers advisors Take advantage of all the other top things to do at the event. These include attending the workshops, partaking in the mock interview practice sessions, visiting the specialist careers advisors for one-to-one advice and meeting the organisations that are offering work experience, apprenticeship schemes and job vacancies, plus make sure you visit Uni Street. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO AT THE EVENT?
Talk to the exhibitors Visit the different stands Try the activities Collect information Ask questions Have fun You will be given a free guide that will give details of all of the exhibitors present and a floor plan showing you what is happening where and when.

ANYTHING ELSE? Some of the physical activities need sensible shoes – so go prepared! Bring notebook and pen and CV if you have one There will be lots of other groups at the event – so listen to the instructions from your group leader If you are in uniform you cannot leave without a teacher You won’t need your bag or valuables – but you can take some money in case you would like to buy food and drinks

Have a Plan - start thinking about who you want to meet and what questions you want to ask
Don’t be afraid - everyone there wants to meet you and chat about careers and opportunities Get involved - this is your chance to have a go and try out your future career Don’t just collect bags and brochures and leave them forgotten in your room. Share the information with parents and friends and they can help you get where you want to go

Intermediate apprenticeship (level 2);
An apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn, and pick up nationally recognised qualifications as you go. There are three levels of apprenticeship a young person can apply for and progress through, depending on their current skills and qualifications: Intermediate apprenticeship (level 2); Advanced apprenticeship (level 3); Degree apprenticeship (level 4 or above). Traineeships prepare young people to become ‘work ready’.
If you’re not quite ready for an apprenticeship, a traineeship could give you the work preparation training, maths and English and work experience needed to move onto an apprenticeship, job or other training. Find a Traineeship: Is a Traineeship for you? Traineeships Traineeships prepare young people, aged 16 to 24 inclusive*, for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’. If a young person isn’t quite ready for an Apprenticeship, a Traineeship could give them the work preparation training, maths and English and work experience needed to move onto an Apprenticeship or other job.
