- To be able to identify a compliant material based on its physical and mechanical properties - To be able to select appropriate compliant materials for different applications Paper properties Opacity An opaque paper with allow little or no image through it from the other side. Gloss This refers to the surface lustre Glare This refers to the way light reflects on the paper Finish This refers to the general characteristics of the surface Smoothness This refers to the absence of surface irregularities Strength This refers to the strength of the individual fibres, their length and their bonds Tensile strength This refers to the amount of pull and stress the paper/card can withstand Bending strength This refers to the flexibility and stiffness of the paper/card Porosity This refers to the density of the paper/card and its ability to allow liquid through it

- To be able to identify a compliant material based on its physical and mechanical properties - To be able to select appropriate compliant materials for different applications Paper - Commonly used by designers to demonstrate and show ideas and designs throughout the design process. - Easy to show clients and receive feedback on Three main types: - Cartridge paper - Used from 2D and 3D sketches - Suitable for rendering sketches - Can be very thick and heavy - Not suitable from marker and watercolours as it bleeds - Is less prone to yellowing over time as not acid in it - Marker paper (Bleed proof paper) - Similar of cartidge paper however has a protective layer to stop to ink from bleed through it - Used for high quality marker rendering - Layout paper - This is a very thin partially translucent paper which is completely used in advertising - Used so that images can be layered up over one another so give an overall image - This make is easier to add and remove parts of the image clients do not want Other papers include: Watercolour paper (for watercolours), Ingress paper (for pastels), Sugar paper (for pastels)

- To be able to identify a compliant material based on its physical and mechanical properties - To be able to select appropriate compliant materials for different applications Card and board Card can be used commonly for packaging as well as printing and display work. Some board as used to create finish/final products. Carton board - Covered the most commonly used card - From single layered card used in cereal boxes to corrugated card used for packaging - Often made from recycle paper and card, as well as fibred wood - Can be bleach or unbleached - Thin carton board often is white and printed in one side, self-colour in the other Holographic card/Metal effect card - As well as printed images and colour into carton board, effect like metal, holograms and mirrors can also be printed on them - These materials can be used in modelling to give the effect of other material - Certain printing techniques can allow hologram and watermarks to be embedded into the card

- To be able to identify a compliant material based on its physical and mechanical properties - To be able to select appropriate compliant materials for different applications Foam board This is made up for multi-layers of card and foam The outer layers are card with a gloss finish The inner is made of a dense foam It is complete used for mood boards and presentation board as well as modelling It is very light weight, easy to cut but difficult to bend Fluted polyproplyene (Correx) This is a extruded thermoplastic sheet It is used to make simple products as well as modelling It is lightweight and durable It is easy to bend due to the fluted spaces
