1 SYL Friday Discussion (put your title here)
(Put your names here and class period) Step by Step Instructions on how to be a successful student facilitator in a Friday Discussion Day

2 Slide 2: Seating Arrangement
Friday discussions will be in small group (4-6) per group You will decide who will be in which group Think about personality types in the classroom and try to put outgoing speakers with more timid speakers to get a good mix On slide 2 create a seating chart; at this point you will instruct students to move to their assigned seats for the class period.

3 Slide 3: Video Clip 2 minutes or less Engaging/Interesting On topic
In Spanish Appropriate Embed your video clip on this slide. Search for clips on youtube and use to download it to an MP4 file. From there, use “Insert” on power point to move it to your slide.

4 Slide 4: Introduction of Topic
Introduce topic (3 minutes speaking) without notes Define the topic Tell which side (if any) you are on and why

5 Slide 5: Introduction of New Words
Provide a list of 10 vocabulary words in Spanish/English on power point and printed copies for each student. Go over each new word and it’s definition. Use the word in a sentence This slide will contain the 10 new words and their definitions Hint: Write your discussion questions first – then think about what new words that you don’t already know that you will need to use in order to answer the questions. *If you get me the list at least 3 days in advance I will make copies for you.

6 Slide 6: Speaking Goals and Grading
Decide what each speaker should focus on – examples: elaboration using a story in the past; giving advice; talking about the future; recalling something that happened in the past, asking a follow up question to another student; etc.. How will points be given and for what? (do not make this too difficult for the grader) Include your grading sheet here Include a list of those who will be in charge of this for each group Go over how this will be done and give an example of how points will be earned Pass out grading sheet (one to a group) Note: One of your responsibilities is to monitor that this is being done correctly in all groups during the discussion. At the end of the class you will return these completed forms to Sra. Jeffery

7 Slide 7: Preguntas Create 10 open ended questions which will guide the conversations/discussions. You may divide them into groups and assign a time for each set of questions or allow the groups to go through them at their own pace. Explain your procedure to all groups. Include a list of the questions on the back of your vocabulary list or on another sheet. Include your list of questions on this slide

8 Think of a good topic idea that students will want to discuss/debate/participate in

9 Every Friday – all class members except for the leaders, will receive a daily grade Leaders will receive a no-count 0 SYL (Speak Your Language) leaders will receive a Major Grade Your grade will be based on the district Presentational Speaking Rubric GRADES
