5. Greatness What would I think is great?
What is the greatest thing for me?
As a Muslim, I believe that God is Great and is the Greatest of all things. We say this every day and when something good happens. In Arabic we say ‘Allahu Akbar’. (Write this down to remember the true meaning of this!)
Apply to the Muslim Faith, what would be great and the greatest in Islam? That would be Allah- and each day Muslim will say Allahu Akbar. The 99 Names follow this as because Muslims believe God is great he cannot be explained

6. The 99 Beautiful Names
• Muslims believe that Allah is eternal (without limits in time).
• Any attempt to capture Allah in an image is an attempt to limit God.
• It is an insult to create an image of God and an image to those who worship him as it is suggesting they worship something with limits.
• Instead, they have the 99 names for Allah to show his qualities and his greatness.
• This is why Muslims use geometric shapes to decorate their mosques instead of images.
Enquire into the 99 names of Allah, why do Muslims have 99 names of Allah? What does this tell Muslims about the nature of God?
Students will have a sheet with the 99 Beautiful Names – explain as a class we are going to create a top ten chart show for these name. 5 have been chosen for them as these are the words they must know for the exam, students now need to choose another 5 to create a top ten.

7. 99 Beautiful Names Chart Show
What were the 5 names you chose to go into your top ten?
As a class we are going to put our top ten names in order from Can you arrange yourselves in an order you agree on before the chart music stops?
Get students to feedback the 5 other names they chose from their sheet. Agree on these three as a class and add these to the 5 names already chosen (there are packs with these written on). Choose 10 students to volunteer and hold a name for God. They need to arrange themselves in order from 1-10 on which name they think is the most important to the least important. Then open this up to the class – do they agree with the order they have chosen? Do they want to move anyone and why?
