3 If this is the answer, what is the question?
268 Days Question: How many days has the world been at peace? Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history.

4 If this is the answer, what is the question?
108 million people How many people have died in war? At least 108 million people were killed in wars in the twentieth century. Estimates for the total number killed in wars throughout all of human history range from 150 million to 1 billion. War has several other effects on population, including decreasing the birth rate by taking men away from their wives. The reduced birth rate during World War II is estimated to have caused a population deficit of more than 20 million people.

5 If this is the answer, what is the question?
21.3 million people How many people around the world serve in the military? The combined armed forces of the world have 21.3 million people. China has the world's largest, with 2.4 million. America is second with 1.4 million. India has 1.3 million, North Korea 1 million, and Russia 900,000. Of the world's 20 largest militaries, 14 are in developing nations

6 If this is the answer, what is the question?
97% What percentage of the military are male? Worldwide, 97 percent of today's military personnel are male. This is thought to be a reflection of culture and biology. Fifteen percent (204,000) of American military personnel are female.

7 If this is the answer, what is the question?
$350 billion per year How much does America spend on it’s military budget each year? In the first years of the twenty-first century, this meant spending roughly $350 billion per year. In comparison, annual spending for other programs included roughly $15 billion on state and international assistance and $60 billion on education.

8 If this is the answer, what is the question?
300,000 How many child soldiers are there around the world? More than 300,000 worldwide. Soldiers are sometimes recruited at age 10 and younger. The youngest carry heavy packs, or sweep roads with brooms and branches to test for landmines.

9 Peace Learning Objective: Will we ever live in a world without war?
I can explore key statistics surrounding the issues of peace and war. I can write a persuasive argument for peace. I can evaluate whether we will ever live in a world without war.

10 Keyword: RECONCILIATION
Peace Keyword: PEACE The absence of war or conflict which leads to happiness and harmony Keyword: FORGIVENESS Showing grace and mercy and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong Keyword: RECONCILIATION When individuals or groups restore friendly relations after conflict or disagreement How do these three concepts link together? Spend time discussing these key concepts with students and the questions below them. Consider real life examples – i.e. WW2, what would have happened had countries not reconciled after this? Is one more important than the other? What are the consequences if one of these is missed out?

11 Add a logo/slogan to go with your pitch.
Elevator Pitch Imagine you are going to be in a lift with some of the world’s most powerful leaders. You have just 2 minutes to convince them that they should work to make peace, show forgiveness and reconciliation in the world and advise them what they should do. Challenge: Add a logo/slogan to go with your pitch. Students could either vote for their favourite pitch at the end of the lesson or you could choose three people from different groups to be the

12 Will we ever live in a world without war?
Discuss this question as a pair. Then join up with another pair and compare your ideas. Share your ideas with the class. If time, students can write a written reflection in their books.
