1 Do you remember how to change from a mixed number to an improper fraction?
5 1 2 4 2 7 = = = =

2 CHANGE: A mixed number to Improper Fraction
Multiply the whole number by the denominator Add your answer to the numerator Put that number on top of the denominator 1 5 2 = 2 2 The denominator always stays the SAME!

3 Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
1) Multiply 2) Add 3) On top! 1 9 4 2 2

4 Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction:
2 12 2 5 5

5 Do you remember how to change from an improper fraction to a mixed number?
7 2 13 3 73 9 15 6 = = = = =

6 CHANGE: An Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number
4 1 1 = 3 3 How many wholes? And how many parts are left over?

7 Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number:
5 1 2 2 2

8 Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number:
7 1 2 3 3

9 What is today’s learning objective?

10 Method: You need to change the mixed number into an improper fraction before you can add them together = = 10 4 = CHECK!! Are the denominators the same? When they are, add the numerators together. 2 2 4 =2 1 2 We can change the answer into a mixed number when the numerator is bigger than the denominator.

11 Adding Mixed Numbers 𝟓 𝟒 + 𝟓 𝟑 = 𝟏𝟓 𝟏𝟐 + 𝟐𝟎 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟑𝟓 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟐 𝟏𝟏 𝟏𝟐 𝟓 𝟒
Work out: You can add the whole numbers first then the fractions in this case but it’s not always easy to deal with the fractions! My suggestion  always change to an improper fraction first! Then give your answer as a mixed number: 𝟓 𝟒 + 𝟓 𝟑 = 𝟏𝟓 𝟏𝟐 + 𝟐𝟎 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟑𝟓 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟐 𝟏𝟏 𝟏𝟐 𝟓 𝟒 𝟓 𝟑

12 Subtracting Mixed Numbers
Work out: −1 1 2 You can subtract the whole numbers first then the fractions in this case, but this isn’t always easy! My suggestion  always change to an improper fraction first! Then give your answer as a mixed number: 𝟐𝟔 𝟕 − 𝟑 𝟐 = 𝟓𝟐 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟐𝟏 𝟏𝟒 = 𝟑𝟏 𝟏𝟒 = 𝟐 𝟑 𝟏𝟒 𝟐𝟔 𝟕 𝟑 𝟐

13 To Add/Subtract Mixed Numbers
Change the mixed numbers to improper fractions Add/Subtract fractions as usual Change the answer back to a mixed number
