to ensure that they have access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

3. An AT is any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the-shelf, modified, or custom-made that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Special Education Rules - §

An AT is any service that directly assists an individual with a disability [or family member or caregiver] in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device.

4. UATT support School LEAs and IEP teams to evaluate, acquire and manage assistive technology for students with disabilities

5. IDEA mandates consideration of assistive technology on an IEP to support a child’s participation in his/her least restrictive learning environment.

What does the student need to be able to do that is difficult or impossible to do independently at this time?
What are the students special needs and abilities?
STUDENT

What activities take place in the environment?
Where will the student participate- classroom, home, community, therapy?
ENVIRONMENT
What materials, equipment, supports, resources are available?
What is the physical arrangement?
What specific tasks occur in the environments which enable progress toward mastery of IEP goals and objectives?
TASKS
What activities is the student expected to do?
SETT stands for Student, Environment, Tasks and Tools.
This is the order in which these elements are discussed when considering assistive technology for a particular student.
Answering these questions help the team gather information that will lead to the solutions that will help the student achieve IEP goals.
