2 Canada Degrees take 4 years. 98 universities + more colleges.
Grades are most important factor. IELTS or TOEFL English exam required. Graduates of Canadian universities are eligible for work permit and residency.

3 Canada Tuition depends on university and major: $15,000-$45,000
Example: UBC Media Studies $35,000 Example: UBC Commerce $45,000 Plus living expenses, books and supplies: approximately $20,000 Some universities offer small year merit-based scholarships.

4 UK 160 universities and colleges in the UK. Many students from Turkey do Foundation Year (Hazırlık yılı) then 3 year degree. IELTS UKVI English test required. Grades are most important factor.

17 AP Courses AP (Advanced Placement) courses are considered “college level” courses and most U.S. universities give college credit for them. Standardized international qualification accepted by UK and Dutch universities as well. Passing grade is 3/5. Some universities require 4 or 5 for credit. Only for ambitious students. For 11th graders: Calculus AB, Physics 1, English Literature, Studio Art, Psychology, Microeconomics For 12th graders: Calculus BC, Physics 2

18 TOEFL / IELTS You only need to take one of these exams. Both are accepted by most universities EXCEPT the UK Foundation require IELTS UKVI. TOEFL exam is done on the computer; IELTS is done on paper and the speaking part is done with a person. Goal: TOEFL: 105/120 IELTS: 7.5/9 Results are valid for 2 years.

19 SAT 1 (Reasoning) The SAT lasts 4.5 hours and has three sections: Critical Reading, Writing and Math. CR and Math sections are worth 800 points for a total of 1600 points. The test is offered internationally six times a year. Students can take it as many times as they want, but typically twice is sufficient.

20 SAT 2 – Subject Tests 20 different test options, depending on student’s areas of interest/ talents. Top universities require 2-3, but it always strengthens the application. Literature, U.S. History, World History, Math Level 1, Math Level 2, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, German, Spanish, Italian Each test lasts 1 hour. Each test is graded out of 800 points. You can take up to 3 tests per exam date.

21 ACT The test lasts 3.5 hours and has four sections: English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning The main four tests are scored individually on a scale of 1–36, and a Composite score is provided which is the whole number average of the four scores. (Perfect score is 36.) The test is offered in Turkey five times a year. Students can take it as many times as they want.

22 DELF/ DELE Exams to demonstrate your proficiency in French and Spanish: • DELF A2: after 8th grade / DELE A2: after 9th grade • DELF B1: after 9th grade / DELE B1: after 11th grade • DELF B2: after 11th grade Why take DELF/ DELE? • With the DELF B2 diploma you can study at a French university. • DELF/ DELE diplomas strengthen your applications to universities.

23 “Denklik” Denklik important if student wants to work for the government later and for boys dealing with the military service. In order for a diploma to be recognized in Turkey, students must attend a YÖK accredited university. However, the rules change often. Currently, students must apply to YÖK to see if university qualifies.

24 Road Map – 9th Grade Keep grades up! Stay involved in activities!
Begin to prepare for IELTS or TOEFL. Plan a summer school, volunteer or internship experience for the summer. Research career options/ majors. Research different countries.

Prepare for IELTS or TOEFL. Plan a summer school, volunteer or internship experience for the summer. Research career options/ majors. Speak with counselor and decide which country to apply to. If applying to the US, begin to prepare for SAT or ACT.

26 Road Map – 11th Grade Keep grades up! Stay involved in activities!
Plan a summer school, volunteer or internship experience for the summer. If applying to the US, prepare for SAT or ACT and take the exam twice by end of the year. Also take the Subject tests and/or DELF/DELE in the spring. Work with counselor to finalize list of schools in the spring. Start writing essays in the spring. Remember: student is making first adult decision, must be responsible for research and s.

27 Road Map – 12th Grade Keep grades up! Stay involved in activities!
(All acceptances are conditional.) Fall is last chance to retake any tests. Ask teachers for letters of recommendation first week of school. Some applications due in October/November. Complete all applications by December 15.

28 Summer Schools Summer schools help students make better choices about careers and where to study. (Try out architecture, engineering, etc.) Shows intellectual curiosity and strengthens the CV. Some academic summer schools require TOEFL/IELTS and sometimes PSAT/SAT. Applications should be done in January-February.

29 Summer Program Ideas Many US High School programs: Choate, Exeter, Salisbury, Cushing, Putney. (No TOEFL) USC, Columbia, Brown, BU, GW have many course offerings. Summer Discovery. Enforex for Spanish, Ceran for French. Art/ Film/ Architecture programs. Oxford Royale for general UK programs (no TOEFL) or King’s. Rustic Pathways for international volunteer experiences (or volunteer at home.)
