Notes for: Knowing & Using your Resources Call the Squad together. (They will look to you as an authority figure; someone to take charge of the squad, but do NOT allow them to give you the ‘mantle’ or task of leadership. Your role is to guide them to select their own leaders.) Ask How are things going? (Give genuine compliments on their progress. Keep the discussion positive and overlook negative things.) Explain You were deliberately given no directions so you would have to work things out for yourselves. Explain If you are to have a great experience this week and get along as a squad you will have to take advantage of the resources available to you. Ask, “What is a resource?” (Allow a few minutes to respond)

What are some of the resources you have in your squad?
Notes for: Examples of Resources What are some of the resources you have in your squad? Equipment– packs, tools, sleeping bags, etc. Quartermaster Supplies– food, etc, Books—handbooks, field books, etc. Nature—woods, water, mountains, etc. Other members of your squad– People are one of our greatest resources. Ask, “How will you get to know the resources of your squad?” (By getting to know the members of the squad). Explain “Because you need to know your resources quickly here on the course, we’re going to use a survey. Refer to your books, page 15, to find the Resource Survey. Please fill it out. You can also add items not on the form” Now take 2 minutes to tell everyone about your “Greatest Strengths” and Skills. (Encourage them as needed and discourage anyone in the squad from making negative comments about another.) Explain While you are on course, each of you will hold a leadership position. (Talk briefly about the duties of Squad Leader, Advancement Program Manager, High Adventure/Sports Program Manager, Service Program Manager, Personal Development Program Manager, and Special Programs and Events Program Manager.) Ask “Now that you know more about each other, do you feel better able to choose your leaders?” (Yes)

Notes for: HOLD Elections
1) A squad leader should know the resources of his group 2) He should make decisions based on his resources 3) Conduct the “Election of Squad officers” Here are some ideas on how to select your leaders: 1) Elect a Squad Leader and have him appoint Program Managers 2) Elect all leadership positions, or 3) Call for volunteers (within the ratifying consent of the squad members). (Note: To select your squad leader you may want to give them a piece of paper and they can do a silent ballot. Tally the ballots and announce who the squad leader is.)

Notes for Summary: Remind A squad leader uses the resources available to get the job done. (Have the newly elected Squad Leader open his book to the “blank duty roster, page 16”) You will need to decide how to assign each of your squad. (Fuel preparation is only on Tuesday & Thursday night)! (Make sure he understands what is required of the squad for the rest of that day, including making assignments on the duty roster). Leave the squad in his charge.
