Operating System Provides graphical user interface (GUI) Manages resources (multitasking) Manage and controls hardware (PnP) Interacts with software (API) Modern operating systems have a graphical user interface (GUI). A GUI allows users to point and click to initiate various commands. The operating system manages the allocation of resources within the processor and memory. Multitasking is a key feature of modern operating systems. Today’s operating systems control a large number of peripheral devices. An OS communicates with hardware by means of device drivers. Plug and Play (PnP) allows you to add hardware on your system. The OS interacts directly with the software you install, giving it the resources needed to run. The application programming interface (API) allows an application to request services from the operating system, such as a request to print or save a file. An API lets a computer programmer write a program that will run on computers with different hardware configurations by sending such service requests to the OS to handle. Operating System (OS) Provides User Interface The user interface is the part of the operating system that you see and interact with. Modern operating systems (Windows, Linux, MAC OS X) have a graphical user interface (GUI). Graphical because we interact with graphic objects such as icons and buttons to control the computer, a GUI allows a user to point and to click on objects to initiate commands. The operating system, often called the OS, is the most important type of system software because it provides the user with the interface to communicate with the hardware and other software on the computer and manage system resources. The Microsoft user interface changed from command-line to GUI in the 1980s. This change made PCs more user-friendly, which helped them increase in popularity. Unlike Windows and Mac, Linux doesn’t refer to a single operating system but rather many different versions (distributions) that use the same kernel or core OS: Linux. Linux was first developed in 1991 by Linus Torvalds, then a graduate student at the University of Helsinki. It was designed to be similar to Unix; A multiuser OS developed in the 1970s that is still used on servers and some specialized workstations. Linux is open source. The code is publicly available, and developers all over the world have created hundreds of Linux distributions (distros) with all kinds of features. Distros include the OS, various utilities, and software applications, such as Internet browsers, games, entertainment software, and an office suite. Utility Software Windows Disk Utilities: Check Disk Optimize Disks Disk Cleanup Backup OS X Disk Utility Windows includes disk utilities to help maintain your computer. Disk checking utilities monitor the health of the file system on a disk. Your disk might become cluttered as time goes by. Files that are fragmented are broken into small pieces and stored in nonadjacent or noncontiguous clusters on the disk. This is referred to as file fragmentation. The Optimize Disks tool arranges the fragmented files to improve efficiency. Disk Cleanup looks for files that can be safely deleted to free up disk space. Backing up refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies can be used to restore the original after a data loss event. We discussed backing up files in Chapter 3.
