1 Abstraction

2 What does Abstraction mean?
Abstraction is the skill of reducing complexity by hiding irrelevant detail and focussing on the most important element. This is a really useful computational skill as once the irrelevant detail has been stripped away computer scientists can focus on what really needs doing.

3 Example Its about seeing the wood rather than the trees and leaves

5 Abstraction in everyday life
Our timetables that we make use abstraction. We only include the relevant information, such as room number, subject, day and time.

6 Abstraction lies at the heart of computational thinking and threads itself through activities that involve simplification, summarising and simulation.

7 Activity Create your own map of the school. You may do this any way you like. Think about what to include that is relevant Hide a golden coin somewhere and mark where you have put it on the map Swap with a partner, now go and find where they have placed their golden coin When you have found it, write about how you used abstraction to draw the map and how you worked out where to find the coin.
