Scopus for Researchers
Easy navigation through the research literature. Three dimensional evaluation of scientific information. Researchers want to find the information they need, not become expert searchers A tool that’s as easy to use as web search but delivers precise results Takes researchers to the full-text article in just one click
4
Content Selection Criteria
Content Selection Committee (consisting of 20 scientist and 10 subject librarians) installed Suggest new titles/sources Yearly approval of title list Contribute to overall strategy Important criteria At least abstract in English Regular publication Peer review/quality

Scopus identifies authors by:
Names Affiliation Co-authors Self citations Source title Subject area

Why do we evaluate authors?
Promotion Funding Grants Policy changes Research tracking
11
H-index A metric to measure scientific productivity and impact
Not an average Article number and citation number are equal or higher. Citation count of article cannot be lower than total article count Author’s total article count = 33 18 of the articles are cited at least 18 times : h-index = 18 (articles 19 through 33 are cited less than 18 times)

Scopus Practice Exercises
Find articles written by Varro E. Tyler a specialist in herbal medicine and pharmacology. How many documents did you find? How many times has his most recent article, PC- SPES: Herbal formulation for prostate cancer, been cited?
14
How many documents are in the latest issue of Food and Nutrition Bulletin?
How many documents does Dean Pascal Goldschmidt of the University of Miami have in Scopus? What is Dr. Goldschmidt’s h-index? Which journal is cited more frequently? Gut or Chest?
15
Please use this powerful tool
In 2012, did Gut or Chest publish more review articles? Do a documents search on “green tea” AND “cancer,” published from 2000 to the present. Limit the search to a conference paper in the health sciences. How many documents did you retrieve? Please use this powerful tool Questions or Comments?
