UAA Aviation-What are we doing to meet the demand?
Four Aviation degrees AMT- 49 Students ATC-28 Students Administration/management-84 Students Piloting -124 Students Total – 285 students ** ** Note: a 2-part dispatcher course sequence has been added
4
Piloting & mid-course adjustments
Retooling flight scheduling by integrating academic and flight requirements. Fall /50 academic schedule for flight related courses. Adding student progress reports to keep students and instructors on task, on time, and on budget. Triple redundant maintenance practices Designated a safety and aircraft maintenance manager to support flight operations
5
Piloting & mid-course adustments
Adding crew rest polices to preclude a recurrence of the Buffalo NY accident, In my opinion, a First Officer at the top of her game could have made a difference in that accident. 12 hour crew day 6 day crew week, standing down 1 day in 7 9 hours of uninterrupted crew rest between crew days.
6
Piloting & mid-course adjustments
Adding quarterly safety stand downs to roll back complacency. This does not mean I found complacency upon my arrival at UAA. It is just a recognition that all pilots CAN become complacent when there are long periods without an accident. The format will include a discussion of recent accidents and incidents. The message is, “If it can happen to a 15,000-hour fighter pilot, it can happen to you!”
7
Piloting & mid-course adjustments
Merging military, general aviation and airline training practices to provide increased training structure by Adding maneuver description guides (MDGs) and gradable syllabi Used a Jeppesen-like training template for PVT, Inst, Comm, MEL, CFI and Merged it with the Naval Aviation Training Command syllabus format.
8
Piloting & mid-course adjustments
Multiengine training is a student graduation choke point. It is the weakest link. Working to add additional twins to the UAA flight line. Any volunteers to help me ?
9
Moving the Retention/Completion needle
Creating additional student achievement and recognition awards to motivate students, Flying Sea Wolf award (piloting ) , Golden Wrench award (AMT), Golden Tower Cab award (ATC), Golden Dollar $ign award (Aviation Admin), 1000-Hour Power R-ATP certificate Yes, UAA aviation is one of the 1000-Hour Power universities.

Flying Sea Wolf Award

1000-hour power certificate
12
BS completer degree & program growth
Rolling out BS-Aeronautical Studies emphasis completer degree fall 2017 Will be available on campus and online Target student body UAA AAS (2-year) AMT and ATC graduates AAS aviation graduates with their ATP already flying for the airlines
13
BS completer degree & program growth
Target student body (continued) AAS graduates with degrees in airplane and/or helicopter piloting, UAV, management, ATC, or AMT Looking to create articulation agreements with lower 48 community colleges. Goal is twofold: Use online cash flow to subsidize Alaskan student scholarships and ATD infrastructure requirements. Extend the UAA “1000-hour power” R-ATP certificate to any AAS airplane student that completes the UAA Aeronautical Studies completer degree and earns their 1250 R-ATP certificate from their parent community college.
14
Military Partnerships & Program Growth
Working to partner with the Community College of the Air Force to create a seamless pathway to UAA’s BS Aviation online degree, for a worldwide UAA footprint. Again, the goal is to increase FTE and its associated cash flow from outside Alaska
15
Industry partnership Have invited regional carriers to campus to recruit our piloting, AMT, and management students Horizon is now recruiting, interviewing, and in some cases, offering to help students with a portion of their flight fees.
16
Industry partnership Some visiting airlines are conducting interviews with any student that has completed their instrument rating. If students pass a written exam and interview, the students are being given a conditional offer of employment. The conditions are: Complete BS degree Build flight hours from 200 to 1,000 as a CFI Possess a 1000-hour power R-ATP certificate
17
Industry partnership I am not trying to create a “brain drain” pathway out of the state! Alaska and Alaskan companies should have “first right of refusal” so-to-speak, to all UAA aviation graduates. But, by inviting lower 48 companies to recruit, I can also attract lower 48 students to UAA. Again, out of state tuition can be used to …..
18
Industry partnership So, PLEASE give me your business cards afterwards. I want to invite all of you to an industry recruitment event at UAA. Additionally, I would like you to be a part of our industry advisory board, looking over our shoulders and keeping our programs relevant to your needs.
19
So, what are we doing at UAA Aviation?
In a word, UAA Aviation is working to increase the availability of aviation expertise to the aviation industry's projected worldwide shortfall. And, specifically for all Alaskan aviation industries That concludes my remarks. Thank you for your very kind attention! My contact info: (907) Questions?
