3. Racism in Florida
Since the end of the Civil War, there had been intense problems with Racism in Florida.
These were exacerbated in the 1900s by a resurgence of the K.K.K. in 1915.
Violence against African-Americans had led to mass migrations of African-Americans North to cities like Chicago and Detroit.

4. Racism in the U.S.
Lynchings had become a national problem as white supremacists tried to exert control.
Mass racially motivated violence had also erupted in cities all over.

5. White Supremacy
The KKK grew in numbers and power during this period of unrest.
In many situations the police either did little to stop the violence against African-Americans or actually made the situations worse.
Many of the racial incidents or outbreaks of violence were started with false accusations of African-American men sexually assaulting white women.

6. Florida
In Florida, the 19th governor, Napoleon Broward, who was in office from actually advocated the purchase of foreign lands for resettlement of African-Americans because he thought they should live completely separate from whites.

7. Florida
The 22nd governor of Florida, Sidney Johnson Catts was very racist, and when the NAACP complained about the lack of attention given to lynchings in the state he said-
"Your Race is always harping on the disgrace it brings to the state by a concourse of white people taking revenge for the dishonoring of a white woman, when if you would [teach] your people not to kill our white officers and disgrace our white women, you would keep down a thousand times greater disgrace."[

8. Florida Racially charged violence was escalating in Florida.
An attack on a white woman in MacClenny, Florida is blamed on an African-American and four men are lynched in August of 1920
In November of 1920 two African-American men tried to vote in Ocoee and the men were killed and all black homes, businesses and gathering places were burned.

9. Florida
In December of 1922 in Perry, a white woman was killed and an escaped black convict was accused of the crime. He was taken from jail and beaten by whites who wanted him to tell him the names of other blacks who had helped him. When he refused he was burned at the stake.

10. Rosewood
During this very violent and racially charged time an incident occurred in Florida that for 60+ years was ignored by history.
The whole town of Rosewood, Florida was attacked and abandoned.

11. Rosewood Rosewood was an African-American town in Northern Florida.
Sumner was an all white town a few miles away.
A white woman in Sumner claimed to have been beaten by a black man. The whites of the area took this as an opportunity to exact vengeance and a horrifying vigilante attack on the city took place.
