Listening is the process of giving meaning to an oral message…it is an important communication skill!!!
Listening is NOT a natural process

Five Steps to the Process of Listening:
1. Hearing- Listen carefully; Physical changes occur such as increased heart rate, increased respiration, and increase body temp (Deafness can be a problem)
2. Attending- Pay attention to a signal
3. Understanding- Take notes of key ideas (the process of making sense); Everyone might not get the same message
4. Responding- Give feedback to speaker
5. Remembering- Research states that we remember only 50% of what we hear immediately after hearing it; that drops from 50% to 35% within 8 hrs; and drops 25% after 2 months
